Cancer I believe. They found a tumor under his right arm last year and it spread all over him.

fom another board-Sonny Schmidt, passed away this morning 25/01/04 at home with His Family. He was very ill and had returned home on Thusday. His Mum, Son, Brothers and loved ones were by His side. It is a sad day for anyone who met Sonny, He was much loved and will be sadly missed. He died a free man and had a become a devout Christian. Please pray for the soul of the great man. The King is dead!

Yes, Phil. A great athlete and nice person. Won Masters O in 1995 and was an Olympia top 6 as well.

Not sure what kind, but was cancer. Another loss for the sport. he will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

He was an awesome bodybuilder in his day great shape and big to boot , the best bodybuilder to come from New Zealand

Oh man that is terrible news he was a awesome bodybuilder. I had wondered what was of him lately sad to hear. Losing a loved one or a hero mentor etc is sad but they ultimately are in a much better place than we are. MM

as stated above, it was a cancerous tumor.. i had a friend years ago (non lifter) who one day found a lump under his jaw.. abou the size of a pea..he showed it to me once and it was hardly noticable but, felt like a bb..so to speak..i and others told him to get it checked.. he did but, many months later.. it was cancer..he did the whole thing.. surgery, chemo, and all that crap.. he is fine now and is 5 years cancer free.. he was lucky..in regards to sonny, i hear he was a great guy with a awesome sense of humor..50 is way to young..it takes times like these to realize how shallow our lives can sometimes be..like throwing a tantrum when you can not get your meals in on time.. or mad because family obligations prevent a workout..or upset because the price of test has gone up ... i think i will go play with my kids...
