T3 and minerals impacting absorption

Do we have any solid answer on whether avoid minerals for 4 hours around taking t3 applies in a similar fashion as it does with t4?

Especially calcium and iron. 4 hours is a little much. I take my t4 when i wake up and don't eat for 45 minutes.

You should avoid minerals around T4 use, it doesnt matter for T3.

T3 can be taken with food, supps, etc.


You can still take T4 with foods, minerals , etc but the absorption will be lower, so a higher dose is needed to compensate. There may be fluctuations if the meals or supplements are of different composition, which is why they recommend empty stomach. (1 hour before eating or 4 hours later).


My preferred recommendation is to take T4 as soon as you wake up and just wait 30-60 minutes. By the time you piss, brush your teeth, etc, at least 30 mins should have passed, titrate dosage as needed based on labs and symptoms.


For T3, take it whenever you want.

I’ve always read to take it 30-60 minutes before first meal and that’s what I’ve been doing. No issues here.

I’ve been prescribes T4 for 17 years or so. Just found out you don’t NEED to take it on an empty stomach. You can take it with food, you just have to take more of it.

This saved me so much hassle

Yep, oral bioavailability of T3 is almost 100% with or without food.


For T4, it's only 60-80% under perfect fasted conditions. So 100 mcg T4 nets you closer to 60-80 mcg T4 on an empty stomach with no absorption or GI tract issues.

Thanks was more worried about Add meds and ssri and absorption than food.
