Win XP Or Vista?

Hi, I have to buy operating system but I am a bit confused among Win XP and Vista. Does anyone have an idea that which one is best and from where I can buy it at a reasonable price?

Well, I personally cant stand Vista yet. I think it's a cumbersome resource hog. I also would never recommend it to corporate as certains recovery options are not yet available and again it's very slow. It should improve with the first service pack, but until then I'll stick with XP. It's basically up to you but realize it will take quite a bit more hardware horsepower to run it.

I wouldn't get vista... its IMHO not ready yet. Lots of existing programs will NOT work with vista including iTunes . :(

not to mention you will have video card driver hell

a co-worker tried for 2 months to get vista to stop BSOD.. he gave up and went back to XP

Buy a Mac :p

I'm with bigmax! Vista is simply Microsoft's way of copy-cat-ing Mac software. Sure, it's a bitch to get used to, but it's worth it in the long run! It's awesome not having to deal with constant viruses, software crashing, freezing, "beta" software and incomplete versions of software, glitches... The list goes on!

Presently Windows XP is running on my system. I had bought it from planetonline.com at reasonable price. I didnt found any problem till now. So, I recommend you to buy Windows XP.

MAC's Rule!!! :p

My fiance about his daughter a new computer with Vista on it. It's running very slow. I was wondering is this normal? Is there anything that can be done help speed it up?

About Mac

...Moreover the new dual core engine is totaly compatible with winXP (don't know for vista but maybe) so if you need to boot your mac as a pc you deinitely can without performance issues, or you can also open Windows in a window (no pun intended) of mac OsX, running quite good, so you can run applications for both systems together.

The problem with getting a new PC with the OS preinstalled is they put so much crap on the image. A lot of this crap is not needed but you have to know what to take off without messing your PC up. That's why I alway install the OS myself and install whatever software I want.

I would stick with XP for now. You need to wait for at least Service pack 1 for Vista. They always have problems first time around.

If the question is should I upgrade to Vista or upgrade to XP then the answer is without a doubt upgrade to XP. If you are buying an entire new system then you will be hard pressed to find one that doesn't come with Vista preinstalled along with so many damn programs you'll never need.

I am running both Vista and XP, on different computers and I really enjoy Vista. Of course mine is on a completely new system with 2gb of ram and a nice upgrade on the graphics card, plus a dual core processor. For me I can do just about everything I need to including running iTunes with no trouble. Even my peripheral's work fine with Vista. However, if I was going to upgrade an existing system I would not do so to Vista. Almost every problem I've read about has been with people who upgraded their older systems to vista and now have this huge OS that eats up every available resource running on an older style processor, graphics card and probably the minimum amount of ram needed.

If I had to upgrade an existing system to Vista I would also upgrade my ram to at least 4gb and my graphics card to the best one I could afford. I would even look into upgrading my processor but if you do all that you should just buy a whole new system.

JMHO

One word of mention buddy, for 32 Bit 4GB is too much, it will never be able to utilize it with a 32 Bit OS. 3GB is all it will allocate even with boot.ini /PAE, & /3GB switches. 64 bit is needed for anything larger because a 32Bit DWORD only goes to 4095MB. That's also the reason for pagefile limitation at 4095 on 32 bit. You would also think that since it is 4095 a memory would be able to go that high also, but thats not the case.

Good point! I like 4gb because I like to run mutlitple programs at once and the occasional game or two so the extra ram keeps it smooth. Plus I do some video editing for fun and I like the extra space. I guess that's why I upgraded the video card and got 2tb of disk storage. Probably over kill but that's kinda how I do everything in life.

Of course, today I had my first real set of problems with vista. I was trying to install Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express and wouldn't you know I had all kinds of issues with my WMI configuration. I tried everything I could think of, ran all kinds of WMIdiagnostic programs fixed a bunch of MOF errors and DLL errors with no luck.

Turns out after 5 hours I simply needed to restore back to when I bought the computer because a couple programs I had gotten off the internet had messed things up. Now all is good and I have my VS 2005 on my new rig.

I was going to say I've installed VS05 on Vista boxes before and didn't really have a problem, just slow as hell. I figured when I started reading your post maybe the setup disk was corrupt until I read the rest. WMI will kill a box now a days. Everything uses it and if it doesn't report correctly your box is fugged. Good luck with your stuff man.

Hey guys,
About Vista.. works just fine, unless you have some strange or proprietary program. I personally use Vista x64 and I absolutely love it! At first the only thing I had trouble with was my printer because there were hardly any printers with Vista x64 drivers. Everything else I have thrown at it gets eaten for lunch!
Of course, you need a certain amount of ram and CPU power. Video doesn't matter much as I started with my onboard Nvidia video and it ran Aero glass smoothly. I also started with 2 gigs of memory, which now is so ridiculously cheap ANYONE can afford 4 gigs. lol
For the tweakers amoung us, you can get a little program called Vlite
http://www.vlite.net that will allow you to install Vista with many features/services removed. It allows you to create an iso file which you can burn your own slimmed down customized version on DVD. You can also add your particular MB/device drivers so they will install from the get-go.

I have been using x64 since the release in November, and it seems to only get better. I haven't experienced any bugs or crashes yet, it seems MS really did a great job this time around. If you can get by the resource hog part of it, it's a really nice OS. Of course, it's nothing compared to PCLinuxOS :D
