A question about the Pros

You see guys like trey brewer, who is now 23, but at 20 years old, was humongous.. How old are most of these pros when they do their first cycle/get on forever.

Honestly, id imagine pretty young.. Trey apparently started training at 16, seriously, and in 4 years he looks like this: **broken link removed**

Is that possible naturally? Either way, its impressive. I would imagine some guys of this caliber start gear pretty young? Anyone have any thoughts on how old the pros are when they first make the jump to the dark side?

* i do not condone steroid use at any age.

they are the genetic elite. stand next to someone pro size and you will realize you might want to pick another sport. they are gentic freaks bro. that is all. IMHO -STEELE

i have no complaints about my size :p
240 @ 5'10, 9%.. but i was just wondering, i mean, pros obviously use gear, and i know some of the pros started young.

to really stand next to a top tier pro is mind boggling.. i remember talking the first time to aaron baker.. he was not known as a mass monster.. but, the shear size of that guy was amazing.. the complete roundness of the muscle bellies only comes with genetics.. no matter how long i eat what aaron did, trained like aaron did, took what aaron did was i gonna come close to aaron.. amazing..

ok now that were agreed that they are huge, can anyone answer the question??

let me just clear a few things up

I was not saying i am anywhere NEAR pro size. I was not trying to compare myself.

I know bodybuilding is a sport that has nearly EVERYTHING to do with genetics, either you have them or you dont. THEY ARE WHAT WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOU IN THE SPORT. Diet, of course, is the one that can make a difference, the one thing you DO have control of.

All i was wondering is what age most of these guys start gear. We all know they do it. But WHEN do you guys think they started? any guesses? I know a couple guys, not so much pros, but fitness models/bodybuilding competitiors that started in their mid to late teens, but what about the mass monsters you see that are only in their 20's?

Any guesses?

my guess

although we tell most guys inquiring about aas to hold off until they reach thier 20's i would guess alot of the big boys started at around 17 or 18. i know from my experience in the 70's a whole lot of guys in my area were starting at that age be it bodybuilding or powerlifting. however i must say most all of them don't even do so much as a pushup now. you would never even guess they were the same person from thier heydays.....a shame really.

Guys like Eddie Robinson, De Mayo, Cutler, Arnold were huge very young. I guesstimate 16, maybe younger...

the second they had cash to get it. thats what they did. 16-17 seems be right. i can't imagine 12 year olds using.

My training partner is 270lb and about 6ft 2in under 12%BF. He is 19 years old and natural.

One thing about him is he is not scared to part with money for food and supplements. Very dedicated.

This is so true. Even stand next to one of the Natural Pro's who have used no (or very little) gear. Take a Jim Cordova or Dave Goodin, for example, and it's obvious to me that I lack the genetics to go very far - gear or no gear.

I hear ya bro, point being a freak is a freak. Im sure some or many start early twentys or teens but take Youngblood for example, he really didnt get going till his thirtys and grew like a weed and won masters olympia. The freak will grow whenever they put it all together. I think juicing to early may stunt long term growth.

this is just a guess but i could see after theyre first competition. with those genetics, taking a local show naturally shouldnt be hard. once you get that done with relative ease compared to everyone else. id guess you would start thinking well ok now ill add some gear and see where that takes me. it is too much of a blanket question. some may have started much later than others, and some way too early. almost like a bell curve. id venture to say most started in the middle somewhere around 18-20.

Didn't Coleman turn pro whilst apparently still natural?

Not entirely related, bu the demographic group seeing the largest increase in steroid usage is 7th grade girls.... I kid you not. Not largest # of users, but largest % of increase over the last few years.

what? why would a 7th grade girl want to start taking steroids?? thats messed up... and to answer op, the two biggest guys I know personally (both going for pro cards) both started when they were 16.

Don't take this the wrong way, but when I stand next to Dexter, I don't look at him as unattainable. Hell even Branch.

Now Coleman, that's another story.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of them started aas a year after they started lifting. Look at shawn ray and lee priest. They got their cards when they were very young. I can imagine how early they started aas. However, this doesn't take away how genetically gifted they are.

I recall meeting Roland Kickinger when he was actively competing and he was massive for a 6'4" bodybuilder (he was guest posing at about 310) and then a few years later he was making a guest appearance at another show and he had dropped a signficant amount of muscle mass (was still lean and bigger than the average guy) as he strived to reinvent himself as an actor. He looked like he had dialed to down to a lean 250-260 lbs.

I got some pics for you....
