Sucks, the lymphoma finally killed Spartacus. At just 39 too.

That's too bad. I was a fan of his work on Spartacus and I was rooting for his full recovery. He was appreciated and will be missed.

LOS ANGELES — Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has died at age 39, according to representatives and family.

Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press.

"On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer," Whitfield's wife Vashti said in a statement. "He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."

Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in "Spartacus," a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film.

The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.

Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer.

While waiting for Whitfield's treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," that aired earlier this year with only a brief voiceover from the actor.

But in January after Whitfield's condition grew worse, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement Sunday night. "We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in `Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life."

Whitfield's previous credits included appearances on the Australian TV shows "Packed to the Rafters" and "McLeod's Daughters."

quite sad when such a young man passes from such a brutal disease. These types of stories always make me reevaluate my priorities- even if it is for a brief second- I thank God for my health and family. RIP.

The guy was absolutely wicked in Spartucus. I had no idea he was even sick. Its incredible to me that we went to the moon, yet we cannot treat cancer effectively. My pals mother came down with cancer and the drugs that the doctors gave her crippled her, she opted to use holistic treatments and now she has nearly fully recovered and she can walk and is doing very well. Look at the people diagnosed with AIDS who took toxic drugs that ended up killing them much faster than AIDS would have killed them if left untreated, its so sad that we cant even trust our own scientists who are meant to be our best and brightest

RIP Andy...shit, that's terrible. He was great in that show.

Lot's of bad news here today...Atwood, Spartacus...I'm afraid to keep reading.

This news seriously bummed me the fuck out today. I really loved the show, and was rooting for Andy to make a full recovery and have the show come back on full time.

May he finally rest in paradise.

When “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” actor Andy Whitfield learned he had cancer, namely stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, he beat it. When a routine checkup discovered that it had returned, Whitfield and his wife Vashti decided to document his second fight against the disease, filming his battle for over a year, up until just before he died at age 39 in September 2011.

The footage has now been turned into a documentary, dubbed “Be Here Now” from Academy Award-nominated director-producer Lilibet Foster. The film was funded in part via the online Kickstarter campaign looking to raise $200,000 with donations accepted through July 23 in order to get the movie edited and into the film festival circuit, according to People magazine. The fundraising efforts are now about $25,000 shy of meeting the goal.

“When we decided to do this, we felt that if we’re going to go through something like this, let’s see what we can learn and share,” Vashti Whitfield tells the publication. “Otherwise, it’s just another wasted journey.”

In the footage, Whitfield opted to let cameras to document everything about his fight to survive, from the joy of being with children to, as the magazine describes, his “darkest moments.”

The piece points to one scene showing the actor reacting to the news that his cancer had returned: “I think I’m just so numb from too much information, that I just don’t know how I feel right now,” he said.

In another scene, according to the article, a hairless Whitfield – “his body now ravaged by the treatment and a tumor so painful he soon wouldn’t be able to walk” – has to lie on his back as he’s fed through a CT scan.

“That’s it, breathe out,” his wife tells him. “You can do this, Andy. You’re doing an incredible job. That’s it, breathe out. Breathe into the pain.”

The footage ends around two weeks before Whitfield’s death on Sept. 11, 2011.

“It’s not going to be a sad movie,” film director Lilibet Foster said of the work. “It’s going to be a very beautiful, inspiring and uplifting film, not the least of which is an amazing love story between him and his wife.”

RIP guy played the role great! I'm sure he was better as a husband, brother, son though.

I was upset when I saw this, not only does cancer suck, but I thought he filled the role of a show that I really like very well. I wasnt too pleased with his replacement, but still find the show pretty good. Atleast for the sake of himself and his familyhis suffereing wasnt drawn out over too long of a time frame.
