when i donated, she looked up some chart when i asked her what my 16.7 iron was converted to crit, she said 50%, but i cant seem to find even a discussion on converting this anywhere online...............anyone have this resource?

They want to say IRON = Hemoblobin and it does and it doesnt....its kind of vague way of saying it to you so they dont have to explain it all out. Hemoglobin in the blood transports oxygen to your body's tissues and hemoglobin has a very large part of the human body's iron in it so in essence when iron is high hemoglobin numbers will be high yes.

There is some theory that if your ferritin or iron is high your RBC's will go up. A female loses iron in her period every month. A male has no way of losing iron...he just retains it and in the case of bodybuilders who eat a tremendous amount of heme iron or red meat, they can slowly develop iron overload problems......thats a whole host of problems including liver probs and damage to the HPTA.

If i was you and it seems like you are having high hemocrit/hemoblobin probs.... I would do the following

a) find out what both your ferritin and iron count is in your blood work
b) if it is high i would take IP6 once in the morning and once late at night (best compound there is for iron overload)
c) always keep highly hydrated
d) Like it or not you need to incorporate cardio into your daily regimen and i dont mean lazy cardio.....I mean brisk 30 minute plus cardio that over time and months will slowly lower your RBC count...your job is to train and gain muscle mass with that daily cardio as a staple...and it can easily be done
e) go over to chicken and eggs and drop the abundance of red meat you might be taking in....as red meat is heme iron (very assimable iron source)
f) Most high end hematocrits that are athlete related seems to be 52.0 and not 50.0 like it is for the layperson but its still something to keep an eye on.

vitamin E
fish oils
baby aspirin every day
(all the above for helping aggregation symptoms)
again hydration

sorry i wrote this very very quickly because my own wife is barking at me downstairs about going on our cardio walk (follow my own advice trust me)....even though im on nothing but TRT

yeah, im on trt, this is why my crit doesnt drop fast .............yeah, i cant stand cardio, i was always of the opinion lifting was enuff, but thats only an hour 3 days a week................not enuff i guess huh

6g fish oil, 2 multis etc etc..............baby aspirin is good or bad?

gal water a day

she said my iron was 16.7, this cant be right, thats super low, must have meant hemoglobin? confusing to say the least, but she said it converted to a 50% crit.............

is IP6 a prescribed med or found in food? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytic_acid

so now that i know she was referring to hemoglobin, i found this

Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, EPO, and Senility

and from it..

Discussion: First, notice that hemoglobin is almost exactly one third of hematocrit. Hemoglobin can be less than one third of hematocrit, but it is normally nearly one third of hematocrit. Hematocrit is defined as the percentage of red blood cells in total blood volume. Since hemoglobin is almost exactly one third of hematocrit, you can multiply hemoglobin by 3 and get a very good approximation of hematocrit, or you can divide hematocrit by 3 and get a very good approximation of hemoglobin.

so, 16.7 x 3 = 50.1

dont know why she had to look it up, its so simple now that i know

i feel i need to get down to 45 crit so i can start a run, so, ive got some work to do ...............i did give a pint of whole, she said that might drop me to 49, maybe...............i can give double red in 2 months, but then its every 4 months , where as if you give whole you can go back every 2, so im not sure which is better in the long run

This sounds paranoid, why would you need to get down to 45? A relatively high hematorcrit is normal for althletes, you just don't want it to be too high.

my thinking is to start low and it wont get too high?

Taking vitamin C will increase iron absorption temporarily. If you take a C supplement with a meal that has a lot of iron, you can come back with very high iron levels. It happened to me, my doc asked me when I was taking my C, I said in the morning and at night with my final meal (which was almost always red meat), he had me stop taking my C with red meat, my iron levels went way down.

interesting
