I have a good computer, however I have had it for two years now and ITs running really slow.. What can i do to ERASE everything and make it perform the way it was when i first got it. I am planning on buying a windows VISTA cd and installing it. However I did that once already and that helped but the computer was still freezing

You installed Vista once already, yet it is still another operating system like XP or below? I don't understand. Did you do a full install, or an upgrade before? How long ago was it that you performed the procedure? Hardware: What processor(s) and memory do you have? I need these facts.

Hey Kaiser
it came with vista when i bought it. Then over the year it became slower and slower. A month ago i paid a guy 60 bucks to re install Windows XP which he did. And obviously it ran a bit faster since it was clean but now its slowing and sticking again.

The computer is AMD turion 319 MHZ, 1.87 GB ram

Wow i am looking at my receipt from 2007 and the computer specs are as below

223-1179
1 AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-53 (512KB/1.7GHz)

313-5434
1 Jet Black

311-7198
1 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz

320-5382
1 High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050)

320-5378
1 ATI RADEON® Xpress1270 HyperMemory™

341-4699
1 80GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

But when I look at the specs generated by the system in control panel, they are similar to the one posted above. How is that possible that they are different? Did the guy I gave my computer to upgrade steal something?

Sorry i am pretty illitrate when it comes to computer hardware stuff

The guy that did the upgrade could have swapped your RAM for a slower speed or sounds like you got a virus, try going to AVAST.COM and down load the FREE home version and follow the directions, also to speed up any comp. you can get rid of as many of those icons where the clock should be, (get rid of that too) they are called terminate and stay residents, also use a plain color desktop background, and just put your monitor to sleep instead of a screensaver ( they use a lot of resources).I would have left Vista off, plain XP pro works just fine IMO.

Are you asking why the difference between the 1.87GB RAM and the "2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667 MHz?

Shared memory means that part of your system ram is used by your video card to improve your display performance. Looks like it's using 130MB, so you're left with 1.87GB for the system.

Your computer is slower because there are programs that are running at your startup that were not originally installed. Your hard drive may also be fragmented.

First, you can defrag your hard drive by clicking "Start" and typing "disk defrag" into the search box. Have it analyze your C drive to see if that could be causing an issue.

Second, you may want to uninstall all programs that you're no longer using.

Third, you can use MSCONFIG to validate what's automatically starting (or if you want to go super geeky, you can get Autoruns from SysInternals and be amazed at how much junk is starting up automatically **broken link removed**)

Lastly, you can use System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time (before you installed software or drivers) to see if that helps. Type "Restore" into the search box to run it. It's best to run this from Safe Mode, by the way. (Reboot and press F8 while booting) The screen will safe "Safe Mode" in all corners if you're in the correct mode.

The System Restore is like traveling back in time. :) This maybe what you're looking for.

Please do not do this, you can cause more problems than you already have. System Restore is for problems that cause the PC not to function, not to speed your PC up. There are many ways to speed up a PC without causing the problems that System Restore can cause.

As a side note, if you have installed SP2 on Vista successfully and do not want to uninstall it and make it SP1 again, you can Start/Run "Compcln.exe". Type "Y" for yesy at the command prompt. This will remove ALL older backup files and reg entries, causing a significant space increase and less backup registry entries. Also, for those of you who make images, this makes your images quite smaller, 1.5GB to 5GB smaller.
