Well that's great! This is a good day for threads! Congratulations!
Pop quiz!
If you combine, mathematically, the wave functions for the s and p orbitals, the "new" or equivalent wave function is known as what kind of orbital?
Well I don't remember everything! It's only been like 10 years! LOL Cut the old man some slack! Anyway, your sp answer is fine but the more specific wavefunction I was looking for was hybrid (specifically, a sp hybrid orbital).um, that was on our very first quiz this semester, but is the correct answer sp?? Now, if you are talking about carbon combining with 3 Hydrogens that would make the carbon an sp3. Each equivilant H would be a 1s tho. is that the answer you were looking for. make me name something. i'm better at that, tho we've only done alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes so far
techinically the term is HYBRIDIZED ATOMIC ORBITAL, or as my prof likes to trip us up on exams, AOs
Name this: (CH3)2C=C(CH3)OH
the 3's and 2 are supp to be subscript but I dont know how to do that on here
small hint: on the right the Methyl and the hydroxyl group are attached to the doubely(that so doesnt look like its spelled right) Carbon
if you cant answer, I understand. once ppl learn Ochem they forget it. Just ask all the RPhs I work with. None of them are any help at all
Are you making your own winny????? J/K.
For getting an A on your organic chem exam!
Wooooohooooo Ms. Fancypants.... Hybridized! Yes. Same deal. I don't know what you got there.... looks like an ester... propionate ester?techinically the term is HYBRIDIZED ATOMIC ORBITAL, or as my prof likes to trip us up on exams, AOs

When it comes to problem solving I am NOTORIOUSLY obsessive! I remember a few years ago, someone gave me a "tavern puzzle" that I could not figure out. Most people don't even know what they are but anyway, I don't think I slept well for two weeks. I've solved almost every one of them I've ever tried but I never solved that one. People always ask me what the contraption on my desk is and I just say, "When you figure it out, let me know." I keep it there to remind myself that there are some problems you just have to let go.does somebody have some OCD tendencies???? uh oh!!!!!! I'm like that too. I HATE it when someone talks about an actor from a movie or the name of a song/band and no one can think of the name. THANK GOD for google!
it would be 3-methyl-2-butenol. a 4 carbon chain. i think. now I need to do an edit to see if its right. I actually was just making something up. when i first did it i had like 8 bonds on one of the carbons and 6 on the other
Crap! we forgot about cis and trans!!!

One of these days, some wicked little prodigy is going to come into my office and solve that while I'm talking with them - and then I'll have to kill them. Either that or give them a scholarship.
