I have a 2 yr bulldog who is losing the hair on his sides. This started a couple months ago but I didn’t think much of it, figured it was just him losing his winter coat. Well I took him to the vet this morning to see what was wrong and he told me it is just something that happens to bulldogs. He informed me there was nothing I could really do and it might just be seasonal.

I know there are a bunch of bulldog owners here. Anyone else have this problem? Can anything be done to prevent this?

I have owned numerous boxers that had the same problems and all the vets said that happens with their breed, so nothing was ever done. Hopefully Emeric will chime in and give advice.

I don't have Bulls, but I do have Rattweilers aka Rat Terriers .
We call them Rattweilers because they think they are as big and mean as one.
We were having a problem with them shedding excessively .
It happen out of the clear blue.
The vet said change their food. Bings ! No more problem .
Strange isn't it .

Hey Emeric thanks for responding to this thread. The first 3 are my english bulldog now with the thinning spots. And as a point of reference the last pic was taken about 6 mths ago before the hair loss started.

Could be a number of things - bulldogs tend to have thyroid and cortisol issues, could be either or. Also could be allergies or demodex, looks more like it's thyroid or allergy based.

Try benadryl 25mg cap 2x a day to see if it helps, will generally ease mild allergies. If its more severe, you may need something like chlorphenramine or an anti fungal/antibiotic like temaril-p. Add in 3-5 fish oil caps as well.

Emeric,
i want to thank you again for sending me the dogtor rx for harley... his hair is growing back and his shedding has minimized a bit.

I'd like to order some more from you...how do i go about this?

Thank you!

Most likely seasonal and some diet based. What kind of food does he eat? It's not mange, if it was mange it would be reddish pink, and have bumps on it. There are a few things you can do nutritionally but I need to know how he eats as of right now.

I have 2 Weimaraners, and my female was losing her hair on her stomach and couldnt figure out why for the longest.. Long story short, she has allergies. The allergies came from the food we fed her for at least 3 years. Also was a constant battle with her getting ear infections. My male also got these same allergies in his ears. We simply changed their food, and voila..Problem solved! We did this on our own, with no help from the vet. He didnt even recommend changing their food. Since than, we no longer use his service.. We goto someone else..

They only eat all natural food, with no corn or by products.. Its more expensive, but saving money in the long run with no more vet bills. Its by Wellness(Core).. They only drink filtered water too..No tap!

Someone mentioned using benadryl, that works somewhat, but dogs get used to it just like humans, and the stuff stops working..

Id try changing their food, it couldnt hurt..

My dog was having the same problem. My vet told me to change the food. I had to find food high in fats. After 3 brands later I went with "instinct". High in good fats. After a couple of weeks his hair grew back and his coat was nice and shiney. No problems since!!

Maybe some help?

I work as a technician at a veterinary hospital and we see that quite often. Sometimes it can be due to thyroid disease...however it is a young dog. Some dogs are sucseptible to seasonal alopecia. That's just where they seem to loose hair on their sides for no medical reason but then it eventually comes back. Look it up online....hope that sheds some light. if you have any other questions or want info on it let me know.
