I knew a guy way back when that use to do the same thing. Crunches for cardio. He would go for like a hour straight. Funny thing was he had one of the biggest beer guts I've ever seen lol
My genetics are complete trash, so I do 400 cable crunches mon,tue,thur,fri and on wed I go in and do OneThousand cable crunches. I do them all in set of one hundred.

Why don't you train them like other muscles and do some heavy crunches with weights for 2-3 sets 6-8 rep and if you do heavy squats and deadlifts should not need much more to build some decent abs accept little lower ab work.
I can't really talk I never trained abs much, but still had a little just from lifting heavy.
