Dad's been on hrt for 3months at 150mg cyp per week. He just got tested and his c-reactive protien is high. The scale is supposed to be less than 1 and his was 3.8 before he start test replacement theropy and now after 3months of that with weight training and high protien its 4.8, so it jumped up one point. He is also on HGH by his doc. Around 1iu per day. What caused it to jump up and is it even a big deal? thanks

Cardiologist

This is a question for your Dad's cardiologist, not a muscle board.

CRP (C Reactive Protein) is a non-specific acute phase reactant signifying inflammation. An increase may be seen by any number of things that cause inflammation such as infection of any form, autoimmune diseases, and countless others. It's typically used by rheumatologists to follow lupus and rheumatiod arthritis. It may be elevated in heart attacks, too, but a CRP level is not routinely done if a heart attack is suspected.

Why were they following his CRP level? It's too generalized of a test to really make a comment on without knowing why his levels were being tested. Not to downplay your question as that value is pretty elevated, but again, CRP can be elevated in numerous situations. I would ask his doctor his impression of the elevation and what he/she thinks it means.

We would really have to know what the rest of his lipid profile looks like at this point. hs-CRP is not a real marker of anything, but rather used to look at the bigger picture in terms of heart disease.

Has he had a lipid profile drawn recently? If so, what do those numbers look like?

Yes, lipid profile was fine. It raised by only a couple points since he started his gh/test replacement theropy, but its still within normal values. Plus he stareted a higher protien diet and lifting, so thats why his lipids raised a little. The CRP he was concerned about. It was high before he started theropy and got one point higher after.
