HOW THE MILITARY HAS CHANGED FROM 1945 TO 2005

1945 - NCO'S had a typewriter on their desks for doing
daily reports.
2005- Everyone has an Internet access computer, and they
wonder why no work is getting done.

1945 - We painted pictures of girls on airplanes to remind
us of home.
2005 - Do it now and see what happens.

1945 - If you got drunk off duty your buddies would take
you back to the dorms to sleep it off.
2005 - If you get drunk they slap you in rehab and ruin
your career.

1945 - You were taught to aim at your enemy and shoot him.
2005 - You spray 500 bullets into the brush, don't hit
anything, and retreat because you're out of ammo.

1945 - Canteens were made of steel, and you could heat
coffee or hot chocolate in them.
2005 - Canteens are made of plastic, you can't heat
anything in them, and they always taste like plastic.

1945 - They collected enemy intelligence and analyzed it.
2005 - They collect your pee and analyze it.

1945 - If you didn't act right, the First Sergeant put you
in the brig until you straightened up.
2005 - If you don't act right, they start a paper trail
that follows you forever.

1945 - Medals were awarded to heroes who saved lives at the
risk of their own.
2005 - Medals are awarded to people who work at
headquarters.

1945 - You slept in barracks like a soldier.
2005 - You sleep in a dormitory like a college kid.

1945 - You ate in a mess hall, which was free, and you
could have all the food you wanted.
2005 - You eat in a dining facility, every slice of bread
or pad of butter costs, and you better not take too much.

1945 - We defeated powerful countries like Germany and
Japan.
2005 - We fight ideological wars with no specific enemies
like the war on drugs and the war on terrorism, with no
victory in sight.

1945 - If you wanted cheap beer and conversation you went
to the NCO or Officer's Club.
2005 - The beer will cost you $3.50, membership is forced,
and someone is watching how much you drink.

1945 - The Exchange had bargains for soldiers who didn't
make much money.
2005 - You can get better and cheaper merchandise at
Wal-Mart and K-Mart.

1945 - We called the enemy names like "Krauts" and "Japs"
because we didn't like them.
2005 - We call the enemy the "opposing force" or
"aggressor" because we don't want to offend them.

1945 - A commander would put his butt on the line to
protect his people.
2005 - A commander will put his people on the line to
protect his butt.

1945 - Wars were planned and run by generals with lots of
important victories.
2005 - Wars are planned by politicians with lots of
equivocating.

1945 - All you could think about was getting out and
becoming a civilian again.
2005 - All you can think about is getting out and becoming
a civilian again.

Were/Are you a solider? I disagree on alot of these things...

I was and agree on most of them. My cousin was in 15 yrs after me and went in because I did and he says its worse than when I was in. He's seen combat in two countries by the time he wa 25 and got out because of candy ass shit. My boss's on is a marine and he's using calling cards from Iraq and internetting daily with mommy(not to imply he ain't a badass). I think the point of was/is was the mindset of the soldier. Its harder now because you can't be wrong. Shit, they've had three investigations of the guys that shot Pat Tillman. All that was was a bunch of freaked out kids that made a terrible mistake(and I'm not saying zero responsibility either).

I was 10 years AF and I agree with all but 3 of these things.

1.
1945 - You were taught to aim at your enemy and shoot him.
2005 - You spray 500 bullets into the brush, don't hit
anything, and retreat because you're out of ammo.

I highly doubt our soldiers are all pussies suddenly

2. 1945 - You ate in a mess hall, which was free, and you
could have all the food you wanted.
2005 - You eat in a dining facility, every slice of bread
or pad of butter costs, and you better not take too much.

I never remember paying at the chow hall unless I was TDY/TAD, but I then had per diem.
3.
1945 - The Exchange had bargains for soldiers who didn't
make much money.
2005 - You can get better and cheaper merchandise at
Wal-Mart and K-Mart.

anyone can find some no-name korean-made TV at $40 at wal-mart and try to compare it to the same size major name brand at the BX/PX. but try and compare that same 27" Sony Trinitron at Walmart....what's that? they don't carry a 27" Sony Trinitron? Go figure!
And does walmart donate a large portion of profits to the military MWR? NOT!
Is Wal-Mart in Iraq? NOT
I would rather support a comany that supports our military. If I could still shop there, I would.

Everything else I totally agree with.

I was in and several of those are on the right track...not all, but many. Its unfortunate actually.

Marine combat vet here... maybe these are all true for the chair force, but a lot of things are still the same for the us.

I can tell you none of these are true about Marines today:

Only time you get stuck in rehab is if your buddies are fuckholes and don't cover your ass.

We still learn to hit what we're aiming at, and Marines never retreat.

That's why we have canteen cups!

Medals... yeah, a lot of times that is true. But I have some friends who aren't with us anymore that have Silver Stars and would disagree...

We still live in barracks, and they are still shitty.

We call the enemy whatever the fuck we want, as long as the pogs aren't around.

you aren't kidding about the marines.
I was TDY to Iwakauni MCAS in southern Japan (powerlifting comp) and the barracks I stayed at had cockroaches so big that they moved the tables when they bumped into them.
those Marines they were the nicest bunch of folks I met in my whole life. i never made friends so easily in my whole life. and even though I was AF, I was a powerlifter and all us powerlifters stick together.

another thing is unless you are an SF (SP) everyone will turn you in, in a heartbeat to make themselves look good. I like that... "chair force"!
