I've been doing body parts once a week for a long time now and I would like to switch it up to twice a week. I normally make it to the gym 6 days, 5 days if I feel like I need an extra day to rest. Here is my usual routine:
Monday Chest/Tri's
5 Minute Eliptical Warm Up
Stretch
Dips/push ups to warm up
12-15 Sets Chest
9-12 Sets Triceps
light Abs
10 Minutes cardio and more dips/pushups
Tuesday
30 Minutes on cardio machines with sets of abs and over/under pull ups in between
Wednesday Legs and Shoulders
5 Minute Eliptical Warm Up
Stretch
Cals to warm up
12-15 Sets Legs
12-15 Sets Shoulders
light Abs
10 Minutes cardio
Thursday
30 Minutes Cardio on cardio machines with sets of abs and pushups/dips in between
Friday Back and Biceps
5 Minute Row Machine Warm Up
Stretch
Pull ups to warm up
12-15 Sets Back
9-12 Sets Biceps
light Abs
10 Minutes cardio and more pullups
Saturday
30 Minutes Cardio and abs, I'll do pullups/dip/pushups if I'm not too sore
The idea, in my head anyway, was that in addition to working each body part once a week I'm also getting mini work on them on my off days but not too close to when I actually work them. Tuesday I was doing pullups for extra work and thursday I was doing dips/pushups for extra work but I felt like it wasn't enough. Yesterday I started the following split:
Monday Chest/Shoulders/tri's with light abs
Tuesday Legs/Back/Bi's with light abs
Wednesday Cardio/Abs
Thursday Chest/Shoulders/tri's with light abs
Friday Legs/Back/Bi's with light abs
Saturday Cardio/Abs
With this I'm eliminating the cardio after the lifting days and the extra work on off days but I'm lifting each body part twice a week, that's the idea anyway. It was rough doing three body parts even though i was doing less sets for each, I usually don't rest much between sets but I had to yesterday I was burned out. Today is going to be a real push to get through my workout. I really like the idea of changing it up and working muscles twice a week I feel like once a week isn't enough but is this overkill? Is there a physical benefit to changing it up or is it just a mental thing? At the moment I'm primarily interested in fat loss and physique. Thanks guys
