How to stay safe? VPN, Proxy or Tor??

I have recently been the victim of an attack at a 'shady' criminal element type coffee shop. Very new to internet security but have been looking into ways to stay safe and also ways to surf without people watching me.

In my research I have come down to these 3 ways to stay anonymous and safe on public networks: VPN, Proxy and Tor. What is my best option? I heard Tor was good but it doesn't protect you on the client side server. I was than referred to "Identity Cloaker". It is a pay service (which is fine if it is all it says it is) and claims better security than Tor and faster internet speeds.

Than I hear about a VPN and how it is essential in network security against intruders and anonymous surfing. All this has just made me more confused.

Here is the bottom line: I want to surf the internet anonymously without a trace and also not allow these hackers and criminals ease of access to my computer since most of my web browsing is done in coffee shops etc AND I want it to be at a decent speed. Not a 28 baud moden speed.

I would prefer NOT to pay but if paying will give me what I want safely and easily I do not mind at all paying for the peace of mind. So what do the pros reccomend? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your instructions. I really need an i player so that I can solve my tension about how to watch bbc iplayer abroad.
I think there may be some proxy serve needed to make it possible. But I want other solution.

I tried TOR several years ago but never could get it to work right. Finally gave up. 1 thing I have noticed, every time some site says they have my IP address, it is a different number than before. I almost never get the same number twice. Maybe it is more difficult to trace you than you might think.

I use my vpn pro ..gives my IP out of the Netherlands...only 9.95 a month ..you buy 1 month at a time ...I use it to download torrents

It's fairly easy to set up and free.

Of course your VPN provider will know who you are, the important thing to factor is whether or not they keep logs on user traffic. Many do not, I suggest you do a Google search for "gizmodo vpn review", they did a thorough article on providers that do or do not log their user traffic

VPN is encrypted but not anonymous, and tor is not encrypted but is anonymous.

Yes but TOR is painfully slow. At the moment, there is just no way to speed up the process of Onion Routing.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but TOR is used solely for web browsing. Torrents, FTP downloads, newsgroups, etc wouldn't have their security enhanced by TOR

Yes, tor is only useful when your machine is not making direct connections to other servers such as would be the case when downloading files.

I find the speed quite tolerable given what it offers.

I just started using TOR, I really like it but it is really clunky at times. very easy set-up.

Also there is a TON of information about anonymous dealings on TOR i.e. payments, web browsing, buying ,and selling. seemingly more than on the regular web. should def check it out

Thank you very much for the insight. I am trying to figure this encrypted and anonymous thing and how to set it up right. This is a big help in the right dirrection.
