Idiot needs XP help

Hey gurus...HELP!

I was downloading windows updates on my comp, went to shut off, and like a fool, shut off before the downloads were complete (didn't crash, let windows do it's shut off thing completely).

So this morn I go to fire up and I get to the point where the windows logon screen should appear, but instead, it just fires back to the very beginning and repeats itself endlessly. I can't boot in safe mode or anything..re-installed Windows to another directory because I don't want to lose any My document files or anything else...is there a way to get my old config\boot back without losing everything?

Sorry if this Q is dumb..I am very lost on this obviously

You already loaded Windows on to another directory. You should have came here first. Now you are going to have a mess on your hands because of your Program Files directory so you might as well put a fresh build on it anyway. Boot into your new installation of Windows, use a thumb drive or burn your data to a CD then do a reload.

I couldn't come here first bro. Can't get online, couldn't use another computer for another few days.

So there are no other options then re-installing ontop of the old Windows?

Its not a matter of no other solution, but you are going to have problems because of your Program Files and Documents and Settings directory are probably the same for both your old build and your new build. Tour best bet now for the long run would be to back up your data and reload Windows, formatting the partition during the setup.
