Ghost 10

I need to know how you guys like this program.
I have been asked by my company to purchase an imaging program for some very import systems in one of our sections. if the hard drive crashed, it would take 24-48 hours to get everything and all the software and data back before I can put it back on line. Time is of the essence for us. using an image disk would/should bring the system back up withing 6 hours.
I have heard some folks using ghost and finding out the disk was worthless and unusable. i can't afford that problem.
I need something that works.
Is Ghost 10 worth it?

Well, images are great for deployment, but as far as backups we use normal backup solutions like Veritas, Legato or NT Backup from Server 2003 because it makes a shadow copy prior to it's backup. If you are worrying about a hard drive going bad on these boxes, order newer boxes with mirrored RAID1. This cost very little and will even boost performance on read I/O. Most venders have RAID SATA 1 & 0 integrated in their chipsets so the only cost would be an extra hard drive while purchasing. don't forget, you would legally need a Ghost license for every image you disburse.

1. Site license
2. Ignore it when it questions you ;)

thanks, It takes forever just to get things ready for adding the data back in, so that is why I need the imaging software.
I created a .bat file to make it very easy for these non IT folks to back-up daily onto a pen. I was hoping to make an autorun.ini file, but it seems that pens don't support that.
with the image and the daily backups, I can have these back running like new in less than 5 hours!

I work IT at the university I am attending, and to give you a little warning about ghost, I wouldn't recommend dropping it in without testing with a model machine first.

It can require some tweaking to get it to pull and dump images on your network.

If it is just a small amount of machines I would go with a mirrored raid setup as mentioned above. Can be alot easier on the mind, depending on your knowledge of such setups.

i had a fresh Dell Optiplex 745 that I imaged, tried it on another 745 and ....nothin! what a waste of money! I have no set up like the ones you mentioned as i am just a local tech (cuz I have the hands-on). the ones in HQ run the real show.

Sometimes the image takes a couple of modifications to work out nowadays. Sysprep works well, but what I find is that a good amount BSOD on the newer HD Audio framework from Microsoft. for some reason the individual parts seem to try to mount instead of the actual core HD frame.

Nah... I have this little ASCII character generator. It's pretty cool. It just let's you choose alternate characters for words...

like:
berry = βέяяỳ
cirrus = Çîrrµ§
eagle = Ęåģļέ

or... here's a good one. Not only is it Latin but it's also all special characters:

íñ ñømîñë påtrì§, ët fí£íí, ët §pìrîtµs §åñçtí

I think I used to have it in my signature many, many, moons ago.

I'm actually proud to say I'm becoming a little more computer savvy. It took a while but I'm coming around. There's a lot to do that I just never tried.
