Kisspeptin spurs healthy ovulation, researchers explain

TUESDAY, March 17 (HealthDay News) -- A hormone called kisspeptin may offer a new treatment for infertility, according to British researchers who found that the hormone can activate the release of sex hormones that control the menstrual cycle.

The study included 10 women who were not menstruating and were infertile due to a hormone imbalance. The researchers injected the participants with either kisspeptin or saline and then measured levels of two sex hormones -- luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) -- essential for ovulation and fertility.

The women who received kisspeptin had a 48-fold increase in LH and a 16-fold increase in FSH, compared to those who received the saline. The study is the first to show that kisspeptin can stimulate production of sex hormones in infertile women, according to the study's authors.

The findings were presented at a Society for Endocrinology meeting in the United Kingdom.

"This research shows that kisspeptin offers huge promise as a treatment for infertility," study author Dr. Waljit Dhillo, of Imperial College London, said in a society news release.

"From our previous results, we know that kisspeptin can stimulate release of reproductive hormones in healthy women. We have now extended this research to show that kisspeptin treatment has the same effect in women with infertility. In fact, our current data show that kisspeptin causes a greater increase in luteinising hormone production in non-menstruating women than in fertile women in the previous study," Dhillo said.

"This is a very exciting result and suggests that kisspeptin treatment could restore reproductive function in women with low sex hormone levels. Our future research will focus on determining the best protocol for repeated kisspeptin administration with the hope of developing a new therapy for infertility," he a

Based on this study, wouldn't it make sense that it would do the same thing for men? And by drastically raising LH and FSH, you would in turn produce a large amount of testosterone? This is of great interest to me because I have low test levels(100-300), LH 1, FSH 1 and big nuts. So if my logic is correct, I need to get my hands on this as soon as possible. Has anyone ever heard of kisspeptin?

If your logic is correct, you need to get your hands on clinical studies on men that prove its efficacy and safety.

Kisspeptin-54 Stimulates the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Gonadal Axis in Human Males, Waljit S. Dhillo, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 90, No. 12 6609-6615 2005

ABSTRACT:

Context: Mutation of the G protein-coupled receptor 54 is associated with a failure of reproductive function. The endogenous neuropeptide agonist for G protein-coupled receptor 54, kisspeptin, potently stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in rodents and primates.

Objective: The present study was designed to determine the effects of elevating circulating kisspeptin levels on LH, FSH, and testosterone in male volunteers.

Design: This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

Setting: This was a hospital-based study.

Participants: Male volunteers (n = 6) were recruited.

Interventions: Each volunteer received a 90-min iv infusion of kisspeptin-54 (4 pmol/kg·min) and a control infusion of saline (0.9%) in random order.

Main Outcome Measure: Plasma LH, FSH, and testosterone concentrations were measured.

Results: Kisspeptin-54 infusion significantly increased plasma LH, FSH, and testosterone concentrations compared with saline infusion (mean 90-min LH: kisspeptin, 10.8 ± 1.5 vs. saline, 4.2 ± 0.5 U/liter, P < 0.001; mean 90-min FSH: kisspeptin, 3.9 ± 0.7 vs. saline, 3.2 ± 0.6 U/liter, P < 0.001; mean 180-min testosterone: kisspeptin, 24.9 ± 1.7 vs. saline, 21.7 ± 2.2 nmol/liter, P < 0.001). The plasma half-life of kisspeptin-54 was calculated to be 27.6 ± 1.1 min. The mean metabolic clearance rate was 3.2 ± 0.2 ml/kg·min, and the volume of distribution was 128.9 ± 12.5 ml/kg.

Conclusion: Elevation of plasma concentrations of kisspeptin in human males significantly increases circulating LH, FSH, and testosterone levels. Kisspeptin infusion provides a novel mechanism for hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis manipulation in disorders of the reproductive system.

But don't forget to read,

Chronic subcutaneous administration of kisspeptin-54 causes testicular degeneration in adult male rats, Emily L. Thompson, Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 291: E1074-E1082, 2006

...Subcutaneous administration of 50 nmol kisspeptin-54 for 1 day increased plasma LH and testosterone. This effect was lost after 2 days of administration, suggesting a downregulation of the HPG axis response to kisspeptin following continuous administration.

Thanks Dat. But I couldn't find a study that tested how long a single dose raised LH, FSH, and Test. What if it were administered eod pwo? Would that be enough time prevent testicular atrophy?

Maybe, but would it elevate enough for that timespan to be worth it? Also, I didn't see any mention of raised estrogen levels, but as with HCG its possible that it also at high enough doses to be useful increases estrogen production more than just injecting testosterone. Not saying it is, but without finding a study that tested the other sex hormones as well i wouldn't be too likely to try it.
