All the time my net starts screwing up for some reason every now and then but then its all good again after a reboot.
You cant really break anything as stuff generally just doesn't go bang, if anything starts to overheat due to dust build up etc then the the box will be shut down automatically.

This is pretty true until solid state hard drives become more dominate. Once that becomes mainstream, sleep will be the best alternative because it is able to wake to do updates and maintenance.
Now that I've had a computer at home for over 10 years I decided to keep it on occassionally. At the beginning I would leave it on constantly but I realized something: I pay an electric bill. The increase in consumption was not as noticeable a difference from the norm as the air conditioner is in August but I could see it when I compared the new bills to the previous ones pre computer. If I need to run a defrag or scan program I may leave it on. All other times it gets powered down when I'm done with it.
