Liquid Meals

Just wanted opinions on eating the bulk of your diet as liquid (ie protein or protein and carbs shakes). The reason I ask is because I am getting busier during the day and it is getting harder and harder for me to find the time to sit down and eat real food during a regular day. I'm always on the go, and shakes just seem to be the obvious solution.

Is there any real differance between eating your food or drinking it? Should I expect less gains if I use more shakes for meals?

Of course I believe it's much better to eat real food. If you can't do that then liquid meals are better than none.

You can kinda turn a liquid meal into a semi solid meal. I use milk, protein powder, raw oats & Udo's oil. It's much better than a straight shake & doesn't go through you as fast.

Been doing that for years....

I have been doing that for over 12 years now and I love it. I have metrx 5 times each day. I have 1 chicken meal in the afternoon, a couple pieces of fruit and a half cup of nuts for my solid foods at other times throughout the day. I don't see how it should make a difference in your nutrtion. Solid food is digested into amino acids and other nutrients and shuttled to the various tissues of the body. The metrx does not require as much digestion to get the amino acids and other nutients to the same tissues and that's the only difference to me. I guess you don't get the satisfaction of actually chewing and the feeling of fullness but the bottom line to me is getting the nutients to the body. I have never had stomach issues like bloating or gas and have tolerated the shakes quite well. I suppose you will have to try it to see what happens. At 52 I have never been stronger or looked better than even 20 years ago. I hope this is helpful to you.

for me I make better gains when eating solid food.Protein shakes should be left to supplement your diet not be your diet.

Yes, I agree, better to eat real food if possible. However, its not easy for me either with my job. The only problem with protein shakes is that they make me a little bloated and gassy. I mix raw oatmeal and olive oil in mine. You know, tuna packs store pretty easily though and fruit can be found at every corner store. Or drink raw oatmeal if you need more carbs.
If your preparing for a show, then I've been told real food is the way to go.

p.s. xcelbeyond-You don't mind if I borrow your Phil signature do you? He just recently straightened out my diet and training and I just wanted to pay my respect cause PHIL'S THE MAN!

A few summers ago I tried the "Supplement-only" routine and I did not like it.

I had one chicken or fish and brown rice meal in the late evening, but all day long I only had Labrada shakes and Pure Protein bars. My gains stagnated, but I did drop bodyfat. I tried to keep the total calories the same as when I eat real food, but I still did not gain as I should have. That's my experience...

Thats why their called "supplements". They are not entended to replace real whole foods. If your diet was not very good to begin with, then switching to a primarily shake based dieat you might not see much difference. But if your on a strong whole and complete food diet it will not be the same when you switch to a shake based diet.

To add to your question Mac, if it is just for a short poeriod you will probably do ok. But for a long term change I doubt you will be peased.

protein difference

What is the difference to your tissues whether or not the digested amino acids come from an egg, beef, fish or a shake????

DRINK YOUR CHICKEN, TUNA AND EGG WHITES. IVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS AND ITS PROLLY SAVED ME HOURS EACH DAY;)

chicken- 3 cans daily 65g protein a can.
Tuna - 1 can when im sick of chicken 65g protein.
egg whites - 40 egg whites daily.

On top of that eat a few other meals one consisting of red meat.

i use a lot more supps than food. phil has posted many times he drinks most of his pro from liquid beef aminos. look at him, does it look like it works>? some people just dont like to eat food all the time. im not a big eater. deppends on the person, but you dant need all foods or even mostly foods to get results.

I agree with this and what xcelbeyond replied. But heck, I'm a girl, what do I know right? lol. :)

Sometimes I'm limited in time when I run the kids around, or doing errands on limited hours...so I portion my chicken in bags, or throw a beef patty in a bag and eat them right out of the bag when I'm in the van or grocery shopping etc...

There seems to be a variety of views on this topic. What I would like to know is what is the real differance in muscle building ability between protein shakes, and protein from food sources (ie meat). I mean, what is the science behind it? There are some pretty large guys here (Vander and Phil) who seem to like the idea of shakes (as do I for convinience reasons). But it seems that they are still getting most if not all their protein from whole foods. Does Whey protein just act too fast and is in and out of your system therefore there isn't enough time for your body to utilize it?

Vander - you are no small dude. Do you ever use whey or other protein powders? By the way, I was just wondering if you have any taste buds in your mouth? ;) Tuna and Apple Juice???

Tuna and Apple Juice is good...I prefer Tuna and OJ Crystal Lite

Hey V - what chicken cans you talking about - I might have to check that one out.

It doesnt make a difference whether you eat your oatmeal in a bowl or drink it from a bottle. All the body sees is food and that it needs to be broken down.
