So I was asking about XueZhiKang on another board and a very knowledgeable bro replied with this anwser:
RYR contains monacolins/mevacolins, compounds that affect the biosynthsis process of cholesterol from LDL.
The main active in Red Yeast Rice is natural Mevacolin identical in structure to Lovastatin. This is the reason why it worked so well.
Since Statins were approved by the FDA for Big Pharma, the FDA decided to take control of the naturally occuring Lovastatin and standardize the removal of this compound as it is now regulated. The regulation is also with concern for the side effects that encompass all class of statin drugs. Statins including Lovastatin are HMG-COA reductase enzyme inhibitors, whcih all carry the same dose dependant side effect risks not limited to Rhabdomyolasis.
Current RYR formulations still contain various monacolins, however, lack adequete amounts of Lovastatin, and although you might find RYR that has naturally occuring "unregulated" Lovastatin content, you still have no guarantee about the amount of lovastatin content and whether your daily dosage exceeds the safety standards. 80mg/day is the established max for statins extrapolated from various tirals like the one below. Many do well with 10-20mg/day.
informational excerpt:
Quote:
As with other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, the risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis is dose related. In a clinical study (EXCEL) in which patients were carefully monitored and some interacting drugs were excluded, there was one case of myopathy among 4933 patients randomized to lovastatin 20-40 mg daily for 48 weeks, and 4 among 1649 patients randomized to 80 mg daily.
If you are aware of the concerns with statins and the fact Lovastatin was the primary active ingredient in RYR, you might just find it a better bet to get Lovastatin directly via one of the Brands it is sold as or generic (Mevacor, etc).
Allday has Generic Lova which may be a well priced alternative with the guarantee you are getting 10, 20, or 40mg per dose of Lova as opposed to unaltered RYR that may have an .4%, 5%, or ?% content.
So I guess my main ? is, should I just go with a lower dose of lovastain to control lipids opposed to XueZhiKang if its the same thing
