well time has come for me now to overpass my sadness from the loss of my dog 1 year 1/2 ago so I decided to buy another dog

we hesitate between an am staff and a bull terrier

what can u say about both guys and gals ?

I just hope you get a good one and ....

that it brings you a lot of happiness.

well.. i can only tell ya from experience.. the am staff is a great dog.. had one many years ago.. the bull terrier is known for their being a bit "tempermental".. they are clownish and fun but, can be kinda "pissy".. i have had pitts and pitt breeds and all were great.. i was watching the westminster dog show a while back and they showed the bull terrier.. they said the same thing.. very fun dog but, exceptionally headstrong.. but, i am sure not all are like that..

Bull terriors rule!! They are spunky and funny and love to be loved. Make sure to get one with one black eye. It attracts the ladies like catnip!

your brother in Christ,

Lucky

I love my English Bull Mike. Very calm, relaxed and easy maintenance.

Im a bull breed lover myself and Id agree with what lats said about the temperment.....they both are cool dogs though. I personally have a pit and a american bulldog....had a freind that had a bull terrior.

personally I'd prefer a Blue american staff with blue eyes if possible but my gf wants a bull terrier ....
I love bullies too but I find Am staff more muscular and I like it ....

tough to decide ....

Well............you could just get rid of the one you don't like as Michael Vick did. I like the american bulldog, or terrier best. Pits are unpredictable, especially around kids, even if they are not trained to fight. I've seen them turn before, my buddy has had several of them.

Ive got an english staffy but I reckon you should go the bull terrier, go to dog training school and socialise it with as many dogs and kids as possible. Bullys are great, any dog should not be left alone with young children, regardless of breed.

Ha, I know this topic well :) My family has been breeding pure Red/Red Nose Pit Bull Terriers for decades, with their lineage documented all the way back to the very first Pit Bull in America (Buster Brown). You stated that Am Staff appears to be more muscular; a very false statement. The pitbulls are far more powerful creatures. If you live in SoCal you should go to some ADBA Weight Pull competitions, ever seen a dog pull 10,000lbs like it was nothing? AmStaffs are also inclined to have numerous health problems as they age. Also as far as temperament goes, I have never known better family dogs than APBT's. Go look at the pics on my families site. Want to see one of the most muscular dogs you've ever laid eyes on? Look at Knight. Wanna see just how maternal a pit bull can be? Look at Elsa. Hope this helps, if you have any questions about the breed, I have a HUGE amount of knowledge andexperience with them.

i think in regards to pitts we have to remember that many have bastardized the breed.. if ya look at the way a true pitt bull is supposed to be represented and some of the monsters out there, you can tell what some breeders have done.. they are breeding for size.. and who knows what other characteristic they are trying to throw in there.. pitts are actually supposed to be fairly small.. most males around 60 pounds and females 50.. my red nose is 48 pounds.. and my old dog harley was a chocolate male pitt and he was 60 pounds.. the dogs that one sees now that are over 100 pounds are a mixture of many breeds and they are still labeled as a pitt.. with that breeding we are seeing other personality flaws as well.. i have numerous pitt books and fighting dog books as well.. and each will tell ya the same thing.. females 40-50 pounds and males 50-60 pounds.. not a big breed at all.. the bad breeding has brought about health issues also.. by the way diesel, max was a awesome looking dog..

Ahhh, VERY TRUE! The most common mix is APBT and Bull Mastiff's. They keep the look of the Pit Bull, with the monstrous size of the Mastiff. If you are seriously considering a Pit Bull, PM me. I can set you up with one from a quality breeder with pure blooded pit bulls w/ papers.

Oh and Thank you for the compliment regarding Max. He was the first pit bull I was ever around, he used to cuddle with me when I was a toddler on the couch. He is a treasured part of our family, even in death.

AMEN DIESEL.. we have a breeder in my town that has "pitts" that are 120 pounds.. he also has bred them with mastiffs.. frickin ' stupid.. the pitt is the most beautiful dog around.. no need to add to it and possibly ruin the health in the process.. they breed for the "tough guy" owners out there and they are not pitts at all.. so for theothers that have had bad experiences with pitts please remember that most of the ones you are seeing may not be true pitts at all.. but, a breeders throw togther to obtain a certain look.. a true pitt is not that big but, have a very muscular appearence.. and they are not human aggressive .. the akc will tell ya that also.. diesel, my harley's father was involved in weight pulling.. he was 60 pounds also but, had a ronnie coleman look..lol.. harley was too lazy to pull weights lol.. but, he got his dads shoulders.. even doing nothing..:D

Haha, that is one thing I love about Pits: They are naturally extremely muscular dogs. Broad shoulders are a very abundant genetic trait, hence they pull so much weight. I would love to see some pics of Harley :)

my pitbull ran from a freakin mouse yesterday........But he is very protective......

If you are looking for something a bit different you may want to try a renascence bulldog. They have great muscularity, with the temperment and face of a bulldog. The breeders claim alot of the health problems that are common in english bulldogs have been worked out as well. I just purchased one about a month back and could not be happier. There is a picture of mine in the recent pet thread in the photo section. The website is rbkc.org.

both are great ...i cant decide between the two ...

No idea why people insist on those aggressive races... There are a lot of other dogs which are loyal, will protect you and your property much better than the races mentioned, and are a lot calmer and easier to be controlled.
Of course one can mention that its not the race of the dog, its the way its brought up and trained, but still, pits and staffs are fighting dogs, its their purpose and thats how they've been bred. You never know when nature calls and your pit rips another dog to shreds with all legal consequences involved.

I love caucasian shepherds for example and huskies (only get the latter if you have a lot of space for him to run around - DO NOT keep it inside!) for example, some other races (dont know their names in English), but i would NEVER get a pitbull or amstaff.
