hi, i have severly injured my shoulder and now i am looking into painkillers. I have heard a lot of things about nubain, but i havent done enough research to justify it at this point. I am aware that its addictive but i dont plan to use it on a regular basis, i am only going to use it twice a week when i work out the top of my body. I have a powerlifting competiton coming up in 5 weeks so i am going to keep working out no matter what. If you have any experience with painkillers please let me know, nubain sounds like scary stuff so id like to find a safer alternative. But please dont recommend anything mild like aleve or tylenol. I am looking for something much stronger to the point where i could numb the muscles. Has anyone used novocaine or tramadol?

Don't even start with Narcotic Pain Killers, it's a downward spiral that starts very fast, it's not worth it, get your shoulder fixed. Going to the narcotic painkiller route is the worst Idea you can make, please beleive me.

I'd go with the tramadol. It works great and there is far less chance of getting addicted to it.

doesnt tramadol cause systemic effects? id rather go with some injectable painkiller so i can simply numb the desired muscle. i have been reading up on nubain and its defenitely not worth the risk. on the other hand lidocaine (the drug that the dentist use) seems pretty safe...

Please dont let this thread go in the wrong direction...Im sure it probably will.
I know this is relevant but rec drugs (any narcotics)can not be discussed in any manner on the board, even for semi-legimate use like injury. :(

shoulder injury shouldnt be taken lightly. why would you want to numb it. how would you then know if you made the injury worse. I would opt out of the comp and let it heal. thats just my take though, whatever route you do go, good luck.

be careful

i guess numbing it would get you through to your competition, but you really have to sit back and look at the fact that if you numb it up and keep training, you could end up doing even more damage to the injured area, so much so that it could end up causing you to have to take much more time off in the long run, then if you were to get it fixed now, and start the healing process....I'm not sure what the injury is, but I've had a shoulder problem for years, and it can really wreak havoc on your gains....the sooner you get it taken care of, the sooner you can get back to business...oh, and i've used tramadol/ultram, but only orally, and it worked extremely well for me, and didn't give me unwanted effects that narco pain killers did...

Dude, you shouldn't be working out on a severely injured shoulder in the first place. My friend tried that, and now he's not allowed to do any upper body activity for six months. You really don't want to end up like that.

Hey bud, you should try to get some physical therapy work done on it. Seek a chiropractor that practices ART (active release techinique) Nothing has ever compared to that for my shoulder problem and now it is gone for good. Before I saw this type of doctor, I had problems for 2 yrs. The key is to go often to begin with, I would say twice per week for several weeks, then once per week will be good, and eventually it'll be healed. I don't know what type of shoulder pain you are having but there is a good chance that you have some adhesions that need to be broken up. Typical shoulder problems include rotator cuff muscles that become adhered to surrounding muscles (or themselves) the muscles typically include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and the subscap..the adhesions cause inflammation, and mechanical compromising of your shoulder tracking. pain is actually the LAST thing to come. to give you an example, my subscap always adheres to my lat, and boy it's painfull and intense therapy (ART) when the doc breaks up those adhesions, but it does the trick and fixes it for real.

bad idea to train on narcotics...you start to rely on them then you get addicted and it's hell trying to stop once you've use them for awhile.

twice a week turns into everyday very fast...especially when tolerance builds.

Get it checked out by the doc and follow his orders. Self-medicating isn't the answer.
