I currently use muscle milk whey protein when I need a quick snack or right before bed. But now I'm thinking I should use casein before bed because it lasts longer or is slower at being digested. My question is there at so many choices out there some with and without extra aminos and other things. Anyone got any pointers on what's just hype and what's real? And am I using them wrong?

Buy straight micellar casein from True Nutrition.... you won't find any better micellar casein IMO

Not a silly question! And I actually miss typed I ment mct's which if you dont know what they are here is a great article on them Bodybuilding.com - MCT Oil: Is It The Ultimate Way To Burn Fat?

I know this thread is about protein powder, but I'd like to ask you a question about a couple things in that article. Thanks for sharing the link, btw.

"Unlike other fats, MCT oil does not go through the lymphatic system. Instead, it is transported directly to the liver where it is metabolized so it releases energy like a carbohydrate and creates lots of ketones (which can be used for fuel) in the process."

- what is a ketone? I see by this article that it is something the body can use as a fuel source, but what is it exactly?

and...

"There are also potential health risks to taking MCT oil as expressed by many healthcare officials. UT Southwestern Researchers have found that MCT oil does raise cholesterol levels like palm oil which is another known cholesterol raising fat. Also, most physicians do not recommend taking MCT oil if you have diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, or high cholesterol."

- It doesnt mention what type of cholesterol is raised. I would imagine both good and bad? or is it just bad?

We are all here to learn so please ask anything you want.

ketones are used for energy in the body and are formed when your body breaks down fat for energy. If you stop eating carbs your body will get its energy from the stored fat which will be ketones. I do not recommend not eating carbs! You will also muscle. Mct's make your body wan to burn more fat so they are a great addition to a bulk. You get your nutrition and you store less fat.

Mct raises mostly good cholesterol, there is bad anytime your talking cholesterol but if your diet is on point and you keep your sodium down you will reap nothing but benefit from this stuff. I actually just got into it and love it. I picked up coconut oil which is filled with mct's and started cooking with it instead of olive oil.

Protein is protein. As long as the macros fit into your goals you're g2g. Obviously you have concentrates, isolates, hydros, and casein but absorption times are not going to be that instrumental in making or breaking your physique. I've been working in these sales for over two years, personal training for a few, and working out for 14. Thus far I have yet to meet anyone who made significant gains due to their protein supplement. More importantly, IMHO, is what focus, energy, and $$$ are you putting into the other aspects of your lifestyle (ie. sleep, food, training, stress mngmt, etc...).

Micellar casein from TN, just like mentalflex said.

Team Skip from TN.... best of both worlds...then add a fat source like nut butter.

Chicken, eggs, milk. Whole foods worked better for me than supp protein ever did.

Exactly. If I had nickel every time someone asked me for a recommendation on protein and I got that dejected look from them cause I said, "any number of these will work but it's mainly gonna come down to your food choices." Many people would rather spend their time and energy choosing THE premier protein rather than investing that $$ in lean meats and, almost more importantly for gains, the proper amount of complex CHO intake.

And that generality is not about the original poster, but just my experience with people who are frustrated with not making the gains they want. They sure know how much protein is in their shake but have no clue how many macros they're consuming outside of that.

Only thing I would add is that people think protein powder is cheaper than whole food sources, but gram for gram it isn't always so. I have found eggs, chicken breast, and dairy cheaper. you just need to buy in bulk. The only thing I see that powders have going for them is convenience, but if you prep your meals in advance, even that isn't much of an advantage. Just my two cents.

Yep. Shakes are good for: 1) convenience; 2) break down quicker for absorption pwo; 3) to add macros when you're already full (easier to drink than chew); 4) certain conditions like gastric bypass.

Pretty much of than those man/pay up and dive into some actual food.

I agree that food is the better choice but I do like my protein before bed. It just makes life easy.
