Question about Bodybuilding and Boxing

In light of Phil's recent post about the boxer in his gym, I wanted to ask a question. I did a search, but didn't turn up too much.

What would be a good workout for someone who also boxes. I love lifting weights, but my trainer says that I am a little too thickly muscled for his liking at my height, and felt I would move better if somewhat smaller. Maybe I am just not flexible enough.

I follow a traditional bodybuilding routine with cardio, and continually strive to gain size and strength. Something along the lines of lifting 3-4 days, and cardio 3-4 days.

I don't want to give up one or the other, but would love to find a "median" between the two that would allow me to have functional strength/size and speed while still looking like a weightlifter.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have trained a couple of fighters over the years. If you are in the heavyweight then weight is not an issue, performance and fitness are. I'll use Hollyfield as an example. Lee Haney took Hollyfield by the balls and trained him like a big BBer, sort of. he used a combo of high rep low rep heavy and light training. The year Haney did this Hollyfield won the world title. I have trained a fighter who needed to stay in a weight division, so I incorporated strength training and high rep work. This kept the weight down but built strength big time. Diet is a major factor in all of this. But weight training for a boxer is a must in my world. After all boxing, like weight training is nothing more than a series of muscular contractions done in an explosive manner. So if you contract the muscle with a load placed on it it gets stronger. Remove that load and do the same contraction explosively and what do you have? More speed more power. Reps of 15,20,30 are not uncommon for this style of training to build strength endurance into the muscle.
