I PM'd a good buddy on this site this question but maybe you guys can help me as well:

Which way is the proper way to do face pulls? The other day my PT had me try both grips:

This way (overhand grip) kills my bad shoulder, I feel it in the upper arm. Possibly referred pain from having a weak rotator cuff:

**broken link removed**

This way (neutral grip) doesn't kill my shoulder but I'm not sure if it's the right way to do face pulls:

**broken link removed**

Is doing it the second way (the neutral grip that doesn't hurt) a good way of doing face pulls so I can work my upper back/rear delts?

i've never done them, but i can say if some movement is painful stay away. there are all kinds of variations you can do on a lot of exercises, so there is always "one right way", in fact the more variey the better

Rotating the arm in that angle seems a pretty good way to do some decent damaged to you rotor cuff to me.

I have been dealing with rotator cuff problems for years, tore mine in '82 and never had it repaired. Do yourself a favour and perform all pulls with palms facing you.

face pulls are a staple of westside. i usually just do them with a band. it's easier on the shoulders and itll give you a hell of a pump. i also do them off of the lat pulldown machine with either the rope attatchment or the one thats straight across with a handle on each side. prolly shouldnt go very heavy on these and i always pull right towards my face.
