Here is another poor lost critter that wandered into my backyard! It's called an Echidna (pronounced a-kid-na). the spikes on it's body serve as protection from preditors. The only preditor that can harm it is MAN! Very slow moving docile creature. Curls up into a little ball when frightened. Impenetrable. The spikes are not piosonous but are as sharp as a 18g needle and will pierce most things. Handle with care. I relocated him/her back to the creek bed behind us.

In the last pic, look at the left hand side of the echidna and you will see it's head and eve. The long snout is for eating termites and ants. It sticks it's snout into the mound or hole and with a very long sticky tongue gathers all the insects.

Kinda cute!

did you get any cuts while rescuing it? Do they get hit by cars alot like possums do here in the states?

Do you have any platipi living by the creekbed?

Yea they do get run over by cars, but they get their revenge in death. It shreds a car tire!! No no cuts, you just have to be real careful when handling them. Like I said they are a very docile creature but you can do yourself some damage if you are too rough with them.

No We don't have any platypus' living in the creek. I would love that if we did! They are usually in higher elevations like some of our mountains.

What! Now they are poisonous.

Very much so. A platypus is the only known poisonous mamal. they
have a set of spikes located behind there hind legs witch carries
venom and can delver a very painful injury. Don't let that innocent
beek full you.

OH shit. I thought you were talking about our little echidna! Yes the platypus has venomous spines it uses for defense. Thing is it is usually long gone before it gets to that stage. They are a very shy creature and will disappear at the first sign of strangers.

Cute little guy. You got balls oldfella I would not be handling that thing. Spikes look sharp as hell as you stated. But you did the right thing.

MEREDITH WANTS THE QUILLS.

THESE INDIANS DO ALL SORTS OF BEADWORK AND QUILLS ON DEER HIDE. WE USE PORCUPINE QUILLS HERE IN NORTH AMERICA. DO THOSE QUILLS COME OUT WHEN THE BRUSH UP AGAINST SOMETHING? LOL

If I would have saw that think I would have jumped 10 feet, screamed like an 8 year old girl and ran faster than an olympic sprinter in the opposite direction.

I'm glad all I have are squirrels :D

your brother in Christ,

Lucky

Only the males, and they are only aggressive during mating season (of course).

But they are poisonous enough that you have to be sent to the hospital, and the pain is extreme.

Cool to see an echidna in real life! Thanks for the pics :)

i think your very lucky,i would love to have all thoes animals on my property the one thing that would freek my out is a spider that is the one animal i would just crush.

do you have any poisonous spiders where you are?

here in the states we call them porcupines

it looks like that creature from the movie "the village"
