It's totally tasteless. You can put 100g of it in a glass of water and it's tasteless.
It has two uses mainly:
offseason - you use it instead of glucose for post insulin shot carbs. Due to it's high GI it will make sure you don't crash from the insulin but it won't make you fat like glucose will.
competition - it's the last carb to be converted to fat, so you can replace the other carbs you are using with it, especially post workout, so you still have lots of energy but with the carb not as easily convertible to fat as other carbs.
