I was talking to a friend the other day about aging and the amount of injuries people seem to sustain in the gym after the age of 30. He is almost there, and said he's heard that it all goes downhill after 30. I had to disagree a bit. I'm stronger, and bigger, than i've ever been. i do have the random injury now and again, but i don't feel any older than i did when i was in my late 20's. I couldn't ever get over 205 a few years ago, but i hit 222 just the other day. I feel, and look, as good as i ever have.

The 30's have been pretty good to me so far. I'll tell you what i think about the 40's someday when i get there.

What do the rest of you think about age?

I think t's all in how you take care of yourself. If you take care of your body, work hard, and pay attention at 30 you're still a pup.

I like the saying "The older I get....... The older OLD gets."

When I was a teen 30 was OLD, Now 70 is old and 40 is just around the corner.

All I have really noticed is a bit more joint pain and some compound exercises I have lost strength in, but I look pretty much the same (neck down) at 39 as I did at 25.

I see a lot of guys get comfortable or complacent in their life and let it all go and get the beer gut, lack of motivation etc and let themselves go downhill.

I always said to myself that I'd never be one of these and as long as no part of my body gives in on me I will continue to lift and stay healthy.

I think it all depends on what your mindset is.

I may not be able to play 80mins of rugby like I did 20 years ago or get 2 hours sleep after a night out and hit the surf bright-eyed and bushy tailed but i've got no more aches and pains than I had in my 20's and I'm in better shape and stronger at 40 than I ever was :)

I'm 50 and didn't notice any changes till after 40. 30 is your prime IMO . Satchel Paige had it right when he said "how old would you be if you didn't know how old you were"
Satchel was one of the greatest baseball players of all time and played in the old negro league

55 next month

i'm turning 55 next month and couldn't be happier with my strength and physique. it takes a few more light sets to warm up but i haven't lost much if anything from my peak....if i even have hit it yet... lol

I'm in my mid 40's and I'm bigger now and feel better than I did when I was in my 20's.
My one goal was to be able to keep up with my children.

ALMOST 50...

and still going strong, although I have lost some strength my size has not changed, and like Tom said, it just takes a little longer to warm up. Also as michelin said a lot of it is your own attitude ! My energy level isn't quite what it used to be but other than that I don't feel much different than I did 20 years ago. ;)

Don't most pros hit their peak in their 30's????

Old

You are only as old as the woman you feel

30 years old....

i just turned 30 last year. i look better now than i EVER looked in my life. im bigger, lean, and a s@*t pile stronger than when i was 21 or 25 and have never been injured from training.

my trick is "listen". i listen to my body. when something aches or doesnt feel quite right i dont cont to train heavy or train that body part. if people would take the time to listen to there body more there might be less injuires.

also knowledge. i think i look and feel better now than i did in my 20's because i have learned so much over the last 7 to 8 years. esp with diet. diet is everything in this sport.

just my .02

50 is around the corner for me and I can tell you that I look better now, than at 40, just as strong. You do have to warm up more, but you can still work out hard.

IMO, every year that we age, brings more wear-and-tear to the body and it's joints, etc. So in part I agree with the getting older might mean more injuries. I don't think you can compare the wear-and-tear from 5 years of training to that of 20 years of training. It just sort of comes with all the good things we get out of training. I have more joint problems and aches now at 33 years old than I did at 20 years old for sure.

However, that doesn't mean things just fall to crap once you reach a particular age. Guys like Pesty are proving that over and over each year. Heck, look at the pics that Mike posted of Benfatto:eek:

I think as we age, we are more prone to injuries, so we have to be smarter with our approaches. I don't think we heal as fast as we did when we were younger. So warming up, stretching etc, are of more importance as we age imo....important at all ages for sure;)

Diet, training, hormonal balances, supplementation, etc are important at all times, but especially as we age. I could eat cocoa krispies all day long when I was 20 years old, now all that brings me is a nice fat gut if I don't plan it correctly.

Not that I use it because it is illegal:D But HGH is a godsend for those of us aging. If used correctly, it is very beneficial in a ton of ways (joints, fat gain/loss/prevention, energy, recovery, skin health/appearance)...or so I hear:)

It's guys like Pesty who make it exciting to age....not that he is old;)

Heck Big A is like 60 now, and he still looks great:p

Train and eat smart, and it will pay off as you age....well, i'm only 33 so I can only speak up this age...lol.

Don't despair and never give up. I am 1 week from 50 and in the last three months, in competition, I have squatted 940, benched 555 and deadlifted 635
Can't wait to turn 50 and smash some more records.

Not as bad as I feared. Aside from my catastrophic heart failure, and my hip replacement surgery coming up in a year or so, not so bad.:D

i have noticed that i lift smarter now, and don't just run into the gym crazy like i used to. Now i laugh at the early 20's guys that only do exercises that are easy on them. I may be a little more sore at times, but i do feel as great as ever. Glad to hear the consensus feels the same way. Is 50 the new 30, then?:D I hope so.

30 is a few months away for Me & I feel as good as ever...I think as B4 mentioned it is about listening to Your body & not making the mistakes many of Us had when younger

Gray Hair

I have it from genetics. Im 29, will be 30 in September, started getting grays in early twenties. Now I am about 10% gray. Tried the Just for Men deal, and just felt like a queer doing it so now I just buzz it. It has no effect on strength though, cause I keep getting bigger and stronger. \

Anybody else got gray?
