Looks like its my week guys, things get better and better.

I am using the Free AVG anti-virus software, its updated regularly.

It has found 2 virus on my computer. One listed as "Java/Byte Verify" and another one (not sure what its called yet)

When the AVG is done running, it says it deleted 1 virus and healed 0.

Soon as I click "run test again" it finds the JAVA virus again. So since it wont delete it or heal it, what are my other options to get this thing off my computer?

thanks

Do yourself a favor, AVG is good, but it is not one of the better ones. First you'll need to remove AVG and any other anti-spyware/antivirus software BEFORE proceeding. Download the newest F-Secure from www.f-secure.com an do a full scan. Prior to running a full scan go into options/advanced (probably bottom right hand corner) and in the Manual Scan section, select "All Files" not just known types. Do not select "All Files" for the Real Time scanner as this will slow down your PC. If the When Virus Found: Disinfect Automatically and When Spyware Found: Delete Automatically aren't set then set them. Then exit out and right click the "F" in the ntask bar and select "Full System Scan". I bet you a Buffalo Nickel it comes up with more that 2 instances of malware. If you have any more trouble reply back and we'll take care of it.

Well after my 2nd run of AVG it said something like:

Files infected 1
Files Healed 0
Files Deleted 0
Files put in Vault 0

So there is still a virus here. When I went over to the STATUS side of AVG one line said "infected Archive", the 2nd line on Virus Status said "Infected, Imbedded object"

Then somehow the AVG Virus Encyclopedia popped up (I said somehow because I have never seen this part of AVG before) it gave this for the query
Java/ByteVerify

"This virus abuses the security vulnerability in Java Virtual Machine described in MS03-011, which gives posibility of runing potentially dangerous operation to java program (like working with files).

Trojan horse using this vulnerability changes Internet Explorer Home page.

The fix is available on Microsoft web pages like WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com"

So is this how to remove it, just go to microsoft website and get the fix?
What if I dont use Internet Explorer, then can I just leave it? Will it mess up my Firefox or anything else?

thanks guys

HeeEEEEeeyyyy Kaiser! Just read your post. lol

So even though I Have some virus already stored in my AVG Virus Vault, u want me to delete the whole program? Won't that let loose the stored virus's?

I also have Norton Antivirus too but I think its an old 2003 or 2004 version. I still use it once a month though.

You're saying delete this too? You are sure? This is a big step for me u know. Like jumping in the pool the first time when you are little without your water wings  :( little nervous here

If you fix it though - preferably make it BETTER- I might just have to send you a thank you gift for the trouble :)

No it wont let them loose. lol... They're contingent upon user intervention, computer viruses do not start on their own. (there's a grey line in explaining) Just do youself a favor, download the newest F-Secure and scan the box. I have seen false positives along with false negatives from AVG and the others so I only trust F-Secure for a baseline. You also might want to say fuggit, and delete that "my home.php" file that was probably a culprit in this matter, and AVG rendered the virus portion of it disable which also broke the file.

DO NOT INSTALL ANY JUNK FROM SYMANTEC, MCAFEE OR NETWORK ASSOCIATES. Norton System Works with AntiVirus 2003-2004 comes with a rootkit that F-Secure was the first to find and dismantle.

I use a VPN and F-Secure is not compatible with it.

Yes it is, you are just not setting it up correctly for it. I run Nortel, Cisco & OpenVPN on boxes with no problem. (actually Nortel is on the box I am replying with)

also, the free version is only a 30 day trial.
unless you have a way to use it longer.
