I always end up yawning when Im training, its completely involuntary but its the full on wide mouth yawns that you get when youre really tired.

I sleep well and it never happens during the day and its not affecting me adversely but I was wondering if anyone else gets this? is it a deficiency of something? is it a spasm? is it one of lifes mysteries?

just looking for a possible explanation, thanks fellas :)

+1

i've heard that yawning has no correlation with "being tired"... its a reaction by the body to force oxygen into your system... although i have no studies/background to substanciate this explaination.

I have read that scientist are not even quite sure why we yawn. But studies have shown that it is contagious. Even your dog can "catch" your yawn!

Me too!

im in the same boat....And were talking those huge wide open mouth yawns where people around you feel the force of the air being sucked into your lungs!!! and constantly too.....i get 1-2 of em' every few sets! It's crazy......good post, i never thought to ask. Have you started any medications recently?

2/3 of the people that read this thread will yawn.
hahha have u heard that radio commercial.

First of all... I just yawned after reading this ha! Secondly, I also experience this when lifting. I always felt kinda foolish because I will be doing a real intense workout and then all of a sudden i find myself yawning every couple minutes!! Kind of nice to know I'm not the only one yawning in the gym hah

"The exact mechanism of yawning is still unclear, but it is commonly believed amongst doctors that yawning is caused by a lack of oxygen in the air, or alveoli of the lungs. Your body produces a yawn in an attempt to increase the oxygen intake into the lungs. The function of alveoli is to diffuse oxygen into the bloodstream and take carbon dioxide from it to be exhaled.

Yawning also occurs when you are tired, bored, or generally fatigued because your breathing tends to slow down under those circumstances and your brain is telling your lungs that it needs more oxygen and your lungs respond by making you take a deep breath (yawn). "

your not by chance taking PAXIL are you?

I read somewhere that when your yawning during intense training, its because your body is producing growth hormone. Wonder if there is any merit to that.

you would think so...
you hear guys talk about how tired they get after they take a shot of their hgh - i did a search but found nothing

anti depressants have been known to make people yawn. theres always a mirror neuron effect that could be going on if someone else working out there is yawning, you'll be more likely to yawn.

not on anti depressants and I train alone at home

From reading the replies I think its maybe my body trying to force more oxygen into my lungs like joeshow5 ex-military and karlhungus desribe.

thanks for the responses guys :)

The less I train & the more I eat... the more I yawn!!!

I never really thought about the possible causes, but yes the increased demand for oxygen seems pretty logical.

At least I know that when my stomach is full from massive amounts of food (way too full... and it shouldn't  :p ), it somehow "pushes" against my lungs which makes it hard to breathe sometimes... especially if I TRY lol to do abs.

Those days I yawn a lot too...

Another good reason to eat LIGHTLY before training, and to prefer frequent small meals through the day to huge feasts at the table. :)
