external hard drive wont start up.

Hi i ahve a toshiba external hard drive. but when i connect it to teh computer it doesnt "start". what i mean by start is it used to make this zooooooooooom noise as if something is spinning inside and hten my computer would read it. however now it doesnt make that noise and my computer doesnt read it. What is the issue and how do i correct it.

Try it on another computer.

Also try a new cord

Also try another USB port on your current computer.

Sounds like you have a bad external HD on your hands. Is there something important on there you need? Or can you toss it out and get a new one easily?

I have always used WD externals, now granted you still have no damn clue what name brand is in there but I have never had a problem with them. Seagate is NOTHING like they used to be. Total garbage. (long story)

yeh allready got a new one. has memories (pics) in there though. might take it to a computer shop see what my options are.

how long did you place it in the freezer? it didnt work for me when I tried it for couple of hours..

Atleast a couple days! Hard drives are a tricky device.

I've had some work for an hour when they started to get hot again, and I've had some run for months.

But that's besides the point. I get in and get what i need, and I get out cause you never know when it won't work again.

Paddington, glad it worked for you! I work in IT, an old timer told me that trick when I first started. No rhyme or reason, but it works.

A couple of days. Mine was a Maxtor. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Exactly! Once it started warming up, it started giving me trouble. I just want to be able to transfer most of the stuff on there to my other external hard drive (Fantom).
