Finding Career with felony record

this is off the topic a bit but i have a question. how do you know how long its been since you got a felony? I mean is it 10 yrs from the time you are arrested and charged, from the time you are sentenced, or from the time you finish jail/ probation? Also, if you got a felony in one state and live in another which state do you ask for the pardon?

1- (state of Pa) it's usually a minimum wait time of ten years gone by from the time you have succesfully finished paying back your dues to society. From the time you got of jail, paid back by way of restitution, finished a court sentencing of drug rehab, whatever. From the time you're done that, start counting ten years forward.

2- they will always make you go back to whatever state you committed the felony in to file for a pardon. (then again, shit changes so fast in many states) but I believe I'm 99% correct.

I know in the state of Ohio that you have to wait five years from the time you are off of parole untill you can file for an expungement of your criminal record. As far as pardons, why bother? An expungement can only be seen by the sentencing judge of any future cases, meaning if you don't plan on catching anymore cases in life than an expungement is fine. A regular law enforcement officer would not be able to pull your record up once it is expunged. An employer would not be able to either.
Certain felonies can not be expunged though so you have to check and see if yours can, I know mine can never be expunged because they are all first degree felonies.

i'm goin to say go after being a full time trainer...a friend of mine is a personal trainer in vegas an makes bank.. if you can get into a area where you have the clients that want to be trained your set!

Training is way down. With the economy down, thats one of the first extra expenses to cut down. He should stay away from it.

Well the OP did state he didn't want to do personal training. I do agree it depends on the town. My gym just reduced it's quantity of trainers by half. We are a small town though and in this recession gym membership is waning

Do yourself a favor and contact a decent attorney. Do your research too and ask around. I did a 6 piece myself and I was in and out. It is what it is and def not the end of the world. As far as the record a sales job is best bet at the most high paying but "IMO" def not easy and I for sure know first hand, esp w the economy. But states all vary. Like AZ it will never come off. But most states its 7-10 years. So if u do 4 years parole that time would start when u wrap up your parole or probation. Cant have any new crim charges or arrests. But if its not too much you go to the court that you were convicted in and get anulification paperwork. It'll cost you $100 per district and then when it gets approved ( if it does) then it goes to the dept. of safety and you pay another $ 100 fee. I had to go to 8 different districts so for me that was $800 to courts then $800 for the dept of safety. My state record which is super long (almost 12 pages) is all getting annuled. And yes its anuled but if you get in trouble then they'll still use it in court. But school is the goal for me too. Do it. Knowledge is key and explaining what you did and who you are is 2 different things. You're not perfect and 13% of the population goes to prison. People can be very forgiving but if you live in fear of just being told no by someone then you will never know. Might take 20 no's to get told one yes. One shot is all you need bro. Remember..You are you're own problem and solution so make it happen

Hey guys.
Ill try to make this short...

I am stuck in a dead end job. (like a million other ppl) I am a warehouse manager for an automotive restyler. But the aftermarket automotive industry is dead. We have closed 3 of our 5 locations. And laid off half of our work force from the other locations. I had to lay off EVERYONE in the warehouse and now run it alone. We took pay cuts in order to keep the company afloat. Been this way for years. I have no room for advancement and no way of getting a raise.

Due to that and a few other reasons... I am looking to go back to school. I have a tour/interview at ITT Tech on Mon.

My problem is...
I have a few felonies on my record. They are all 5 years or older. One of them is a drug related felony. I know that it can be hard to get loans/grants with a felony record. So Im worried I wont be able to ever go back to school.

I would like to be able to have a solid career/income so that I may start a family sometime. I come from a childhood where my brother and I didnt always have food to eat or water for showers. I dont want my kids to live that way. I want to provide for them in ways I never had availabe.

Im not looking for a crazy, high paying career. But something that pays the bills and takes care of me and my future.

I know that many of the members here have also had rough pasts and made mistakes. But have turned their lives around and have gone on to be successful.

So what Im asking... does anyone have any resources or info that may steer me in the right direction?

Any organizations, or such that help felons? Grants, school loans, tech schools, apprenticeships? Career counselors?

I am 27 and have been out of school for 10 years. I dont even know where to begin and its a bit overwhelming to be honest.

Thanks for any info guys.

Ok, I havent read through everyones posts here, but first answer to come to my mind is join a trade union. I know ALOT of guys that have felonies in my trade and I make 46$ an hour, plus benefits. My total package is at around 70 an hour and over time is easy to come by in Chicago, very easy to clear 100k and THEY paid me to goto school.

They can be hard to get into, but if you are persistent and sign up for multiple trades so you're waiting on a few different lists it can seriously pay off.

Edit: Grammatical error

can a felon become a tradesmen like an iron worker or something in a union?

Whoops just read the post before mine and didn't realize it was already suggested.

How do you sign up for those trades? or get on the lists? is it a test for all of them?

Gotta post again LE, child hood friend just got on and accepted into the police academy in Seattle. Starting pay is around 50K a year just while in the academy.

He has a felony drug charge (no charge) and also a felony theft conviction. Both years ago. Hes only 28, he will retire at 48 with a full pension giving around 75-90K a year for the rest of his life and will get AMAZING health etc benefits....

Like I said in LE we can all deal with the fact that you have a past... what we can't deal with is you lying to us about it. Just be honest go talk to a recruiter, be sincere that that part of your life is over...

Not to mention its FUN work as long as you don't want to be a traffic ticket bitch.

Every state has a laws regarding what you can/cannot ask about as part of the screening process. For example, where I live an employer cannot ask anything about arrests-period. It cannot ask about convictions older than 10 years.

Convictions less than ten years can be asked about only after a legitimate offer of employment has been made. The employer than needs to link the conviction with the job duties before it can retract the offer.

There are of course exceptions for certain government positions.

So, check your laws. Good luck.

Since you work as a warehouse manager something of interest could be getting a 2 year degree in supply chain management. That is what I am working on right now, transitioning from distributon supervisor to logistics specialist (45K a year to 90K). All from a two year degree from University of Phoenix and I am not even done yet. Where I live warehouses arent shutting down/laying off though, it is actually booming.

I have experience managing health clubs and training. However, I am also a convicted felon. How hard will it be for me to secure the financing needed to open a small (5000 sqft) fitness facility? Are there any programs or SBA type stuff that might help? man its frustrating....

 an LE Department is hiring recruits w felonies on their Records? First I've of that, well let me rephrase that. In a town of Cicero, Illinois many years ago many LE Officer were hired w felonies, however, once the State Police got involved they were all fired! Also, the towns President went to jail for many years for corruption...

Personally, if you have a Felony on your record for whatever reasons the charges were that within itself is going to be very difficult to expunge, removed, pardon, etc. Only a Governor can pardon you but those cases are extremely rare unless of course you have lots of cash than "ANYTHING" is possible with the amount of corruption that exist in Politics these days...

Oilfield. I have 1 violent felony with hate crime attached to it and i started in the oilfield right out of prison making 80kyou a year. Now i make 700you a day and work 2in weeks on 2away weeks of

What the fuck kind of person are you? Wow. Sorry, but I wouldnt admit to shit like that. Thats horrible.

Bit judgemental? I made mistakes as a youngster and did my time. I have s family now and live in a different mind set. I will not go into specifics on my case but the guy i assaulted was not an innocent minority minding his own business.

One thing I learned in jail.... never judge.

There are always multiple sides to a story...

and whatever the law accused you of... doesnt always mean its what you did.

I got banged for "distribution of cocaine"...

I sold .2g to a friend.

So am I a big time drug dealer selling kilos for the cartel?

No.

I also got banged for burglary.

Well it was my home. That my name was on the lease.

But my girl had put a restraining order on me cuz I threatened her brothers best friend with a knife (a guy who at the time was twice my size)... cuz he came into my home and tried to beat my ass because I said he was a douche. (which he was)

But since she had a restraining order on me... I couldnt go in my own home.

So one night I went in and got some clothes cuz I was living without anything.

And that got me a burglary charge.

Seem fair?

There are thousands of ppl who are locked up for shit that honestly wouldnt stand up in court IF we could afford fucking lawyers.
