WOW!!!

Affliction Leaves MMA to Join UFC

By Tom Ngo
(5thRound.com)
July 24th, 2009

In one fatal Josh Barnett swoop, Affliction Entertainment appears to have become a thing of the past. According to reports, the popular clothing company will cease all mixed martial arts promotional efforts in order to become an official sponsor for the UFC.

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports first reported the news on Friday afternoon, and a UFC official told MMAWeekly.com that a joint announcement between the UFC and Affliction is expected shortly.

Word just hit the street, so few details about the agreement are known at this point, however it’s possible that you could see Affliction plastered all over UFC fighters as soon as UFC 101 on August 8th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The world’s largest MMA organization offered Affliction a similar deal after their second promotion, “Day of Reckoning,” earlier this year. It would allow both companies to focus on what they did best, with all parties prospering together.

That agreement would have had Affliction creating and printing co-branded shirts exclusively for UFC events. It would also allow Affliction to once again sponsor UFC fighters.

Affliction scoffed at the notion, stating they were here to stay as a legit contender to the UFC. In light of today’s canceled “Affliction: Trilogy” event, it appears that we can add another organization to the list of casualties.

Here's another story as well:

Affliction Fighters Finding New Homes

By Tom Ngo

With today’s shocking announcement that Affliction Entertainment decided to scrap their “Trilogy” event, and apparently their MMA efforts altogether, the race is on to acquire some of the fights or fighters that now don’t have homes.

Logically, M-1 Global, the co-promoter for all of Affliction’s shows, including “Trilogy,” would have the inside track on landing any bout on the card that they want, or at least first right to refusal.

The two remaining crown jewel bouts on the roster is the light heavyweight matchup between Strikeforce champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Gegard Mousasi.

Considering they lent Babalu out to Affliction for this event, and their upcoming “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg” promotion taking a significant hit this week as well, they might insist on having the services of their 205-pound title holder in order to salvage their card.

Almost as quickly as Affliction went down this week, Strikeforce was almost right there with them. Heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem was forced to pull of his his title bout against Fabricio Werdum when it was revealed that he was having complications with his injured hand.

Today, it was confirmed that Joe Riggs was going to have to pull out of his welterweight title fight against Nick Diaz on that same August 15th card after suffering a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug.

It is being rumored that Jay Heiron, another Affliction fallout, has thrown his name in the hat to sub in for Riggs and take on Diaz for the open title.

“We would like to fight Nick Diaz,” Heiron’s coach Shawn Tompkins told Sherdog.com. “It would be great timing. Jay’s medicals are passed, he’s ready to go. He’s trained for a fight. Why not put him and Nick Diaz in together? I think he’s the guy that’s going to beat Diaz. It might as well be for the title.”

“M-1: Breakthrough” currently has Don Frye
and “King Mo” Lawal headlining their first ever major event in the States. Because they are working on a limited budget, it is highly unlikely they will be able to land the other big scrap, the light heavyweight battle between Vitor Belfort and Jorge Santiago.

Most likely, M-1 will make a run at more cost effective fighters such as Paul Buentello, Takanori Gomi, Ben Rothwell and Hieron if he doesn’t land the gig against Diaz.

I'd really like to see Fedor vs Lesnar :D

Also I think the UFC should get Vitor Belfort back as a middleweight

I hope Barnett goes to UFC as well. The guy really gets overlooked and shouldn't. Plus, the UFC HW division could always use another guy of Barnett's caliber. Now we wait and see if Fedor will finally come to terms with Zuffa.

I have no doubt we will see fedor fighting in the UFC before year end. And I still think Lesnar will beat him.

as far as

Lesnar beating Fedor... it really could go either way. Of course if Brock tries to stand with Fedor, Fedor has the significant advantage. Problem is, Lesnar will have reach, and about 50 to 60 pounds on him. Not to mention that Brock is a mobile 280. If brock gets him down and controls him, he could definitely pound him out.

Wow! another one down.UFC still standing and thriving.
I think you guys will be very surprised when Lesnar beats Fedor. He is still so new and learning and has pummeled some damn good fighters! Wheres he going to be in a year? two years ? He is gonna be that good! And most important he is motivated. He is hungry to learn and win,he isn't the lazy fat champ content to bath in the recent glory. He isn't hanging out in the clubs with an entourage, chasing women, drinking and smoking etc.. he is training.

Brock couldn't keep Randy Couture down. Fedor is a strong guy. I don't think Lesnar could man handle Fedor. If they wind up on the ground, Fedor will submit him, if they stand...Well there's always a punchers chance!

Maybe this could develope into an epic battle.Go 1 and 1 in first two fights and then the rubber match "fight"! Biggest pay-per-view of all time.Five round balls to the walls battle!Could have the makings.

Fedor will dominate any UFC HW. Barnett was the only won that I though might take him the distance (however only to lose in the end)

One question... if Fedor goes to the UFC is he automatically qualified for a title shot against Lesnar, or will he have to fight some other heavyweights, first? There should be another couple of heavyweights in line waiting to challenge Lesnar... I don't know if Fedor can just waltz in and take the next title shot. I would like to see that happen, however. I think that Fedor should be sent in for a title shot no matter what with his first fight in the UFC. Of course, this is all hypothetical and assuming that Fedor is actually going to the UFC in the first place. Time will tell.

Sucks the PPV is cancelled...ahh well Dana seems to have everything always go his way ya know

...hopefully diaz comes back to ufc..babalu

...Mousasi is an animal..so that would be cool.

NO DOUBT FEDOR WILL FIGHT LESNAR SOON ENOUGH!!!

Dana can throw whoever he wants in there at any time and given the fact that Fedor is recoginized across the board as the top heavyweight theres a good chance the title would be his first fight.

That being said, I wouldnt be surprised to see him fight a lower level heavy first and then Lesnar...you know just to kind of wet our appetites!

Conspiracy theory.......

Anyone ever thought that Dana white paid Barnett to fail his UA with promises of more lucrative fights and contracts in the UFC. It would have been his way of making affliction buckle, and monopolizing the MMA scene. Sorry not to hijack the thread.

My thoughts on the thread is that it sucks. It is always healthy to have competition within the market. I was very sad to see Pride be bought out.

As far as Fedor-Lesnar.....Fedor would smash him. Thats is Danas intent i think. Created a arrogant villian(Lesnar), brings in the humble champion(Fedor) and smashes Brock.

And i wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Fedor to sign with the UFC. He hates Dana, and doesen't want to fight to fatten his pockets. It wouldn't surprise me if fighters started becoming somewhat of free agents. Promote themselves, and fight who they want, and get the paydays they want. Fedor may very well choose to retire just to prove a point to Dana. That he is a man of standards, and can not be bought.

Gordo, you bring up an interesting idea. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Dana were to pull something like that.

With Fedor, I see him doing the Anderson Silva route. Bring in a World Class fighter that most new fans have only heard about to show what he can do, then after seeing the guy, know damn well he's getting the next title shot. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised either if Dana puts him right into the mix and promotes Lesnar vs. Fedor.

With Lesnar vs. Emelianenko, Lesnar has a chance. To be perfectly honest, Brock hasn't fought someone as complete as Fedor yet. Fedor's standup is solid, and his groundwork speaks for itself. Fedor doesn't waiver or get frustrated, hell he never shows emotion, and that plays to his advantage. If this fight happens, I'll go with Fedor via Submission, but I wouldn't be surprised if Brock beat him either.

Dana White is an ass clown whole will end up ruining this sport making it to much of a buisness and playing favorites.

I see it turning into a WWE type thing in the years to come unless the fighters do somthing about it.

I love the UFC and hope this isnt the case,,,however the last Lesnar fight with his dramtic antics did make me think of the WWE instantly.

If it wasn't for Dana White, no one would know what mma is.
