Big city dep differ from small city on the hiring process. Pay/shift structure depend on where you're at. I've been at it since 2006. It's not an easy job(in a big city especially) but it's an honest and rewarding job.
My advice to you is if it's something that is only appealing to you bc it's a "cool" job and the chicks dig firemen then please don't waste your time. We run guys like that out. If you really want to make a difference in your community and truly help/save ppls lives all while it going unnoticed and being under paid for the job you do and there is no hesitation on you being willing to lay down your life for a complete stranger then look into it.
For me, I live and breathe it and I wouldn't do a damn thing besides it. Most ppl can't stomach the things we see and do on a daily basis. So really ask yourself if you can and if what I said above fits with you. Firefighting/EMS isn't for everyone. We are the only ones running into a burning building while everyone is running out.
