Hey guys new here but am on a couple of other forums, OL is my true love but honestly don't know why it isn't popular in the US, besides the fact you have to win a gold medal to get a sponsor LOL. Take care.
 
I think the main reason is olympic lifting doesnt do as much for asthetics as bodybuilding or powerlifting. Also its somewhat unsafer and many gyms arent equipped to do it properly

Pretty much what he said - they don't build the beach muscles, the pro BB'ers don't do the lifts, and because people don't see others at the gym doing the lifts, they don't know about the lifts.

However, although I don't OL per se I do clean before I squat or deadlift because;

a) cleans are awesome for trap growth
b) I like the idea of developing speed and power

I'm a man, so the above two reasons are enough for me to clean.;)

exactly. to do the lifts correctly and safely you need a coach or somebody very well versed in the lifts to teach you, and most gyms don't have anyone like that.
i'm pretty sure i'm the only one at my gym that does any OL, but i do them because it helps with my toss for cheerleading not just for powerlifting purposes. however, i do see some carry over between my clean and DL.
 
To optimize your OLY lifting, a coach would be beneficial. However, you can still make great gains being your own coach . . as long as you're not a total mongoloid.
 
I like doing Cleans....but once I get over 245lb, I realize just how crappy my form really is....I need coaching to fix the multitude of form issues, and honestly I don't have the time. Cleans work great for my power, but I need to sacrifice the time form my core lifts to do them justice...

People don't do them, because they don't want to hurt themselves, and they are very aware how easy it is to get hurt when you are throwing weight around.
 
Oly lifting is mainly what I do. I do have a coach and I lift 3 days a week and focus on something power lifting related another day of the week. I will say that while it might not have the same type of effects on the body as bodybuilding type lifting, it does make the body grow very proportionality, and not overly bulky in some parts more than others.

We also do some conditioning work, but that's a whole other topic. :banghead:
 
Hi, I do OLY all my training. Normal OLY routine. It just seem to work better for my body than splits. Also, it's much better like natural athlete. It's hard to learn technique but you can do it even without coach. Just watch a lot of videos and read some books. And practice. Don't rush with increasing weight until you feel that the weight is easy for you.
