I recently decided that I'd like to learn about Linux. Wow. It's a whole other world. If any of you guys are familiar with it I was wondering...

1- Which in your opinion is the best (easiest) distro to learn Linux? Fedora Core 6?
2- Which is the best Linux distro to run a server?
3- Do you run a server?

Thanks
EJ

Welcome to the wonderful (most of the time) world of open source software. I've been using various flavors of Linux for the last 7 years, and you're right it is a whole other world.

1) You can't go wrong with Fedora or Ubuntu.
2) Again, if you're just starting to use Linux I'd stick with one of the above,
they'll save you a lot of headaches in the long run.
3) Yes.

you know you gotta admire bill gates for making billions of $$ with his worthless windows crap when linux is like 10000000000000x better and FREE...

the art of business is selling somebody a smoking turd for $ when they can have a delicious steak for free...i bow down to bill gates...alex

Linux sysadmin..

1. Debian, may not be the easiest, but one of the most stable while still being kept up to date with patches.
2. Debian, without a doubt, again might not be the easiest to learn, but Debian stays way ahead of RedHat when it comes to releasing patches and aptitude is one of the greatest package management interfaces to come along.
3. Yes, many. I am a sysadmin for a web hosting company.

Thanks for your responses.

I have a copy of Fedora Core 6. It seems fairly straight-forward. I think I'm going to start with that, then move to Debian. It seems that Fedora is more commericalized than Debian... Prob because of the fact that Fedora is controlled by Red Hat (which is a publicly traded company).

Currently running Ubuntu for my desktop but all of my servers are older redhat boxes except for two shiny new Solaris machines.

I'm quite impressed with Solaris and the ZFS file system.

You can also download MS VirtualPC 2007 and install several Os's to try without messing up your current OS.

I am kinda new to Linux, not some power-user mind you but I have tried RedHat, Mandrake (now Mandriva), and PClinuxOS. I love the latter one and the newest version really rocks! For someone who wants to install and go, basically any Linux is good, they have many programs installed that most people use and a fairly good browser. Now, file searching/managment has been a problem for me with Linux, it's much different than Windows, which I have used for nearly 20 years. Try a few and see which is more friendly to you, you can hardly go wrong with any of the above mentioned ones.

I like debian the best.. mainly cuz im a lazy ass and hate compiling stuff

I hate all things RH since I gave up on them and their stupid downloader from 7.3
