Not sure what you mean by a targeted ketogenic diet, but I did a ketogenic diet once and had great results. I think I was limiting myself to 50 grams or less carbs per day. I also tried Phil's approach and did just about as well at getting lean and felt a lot more healthy and got stronger. The keto worked good for getting lean, but I felt like crap a lot and I was not able to make much of any progress on my physique.
I would use Phil Hernon's approach or something similar since it produced just about as good a result in fat loss and I was much more healthy doing so.
I haven't tried Phil's approach, but I do know Dr. Di Pasquale's AD works great and I feel very healthy on it. Muscular bulking is a cinch and cutting is too. I'm constantly getting stronger regardless of which phase I'm in. I couldn't be happier.
