I just began reading about this and it struck me as very interesting. The downside is that most of the info is on pothead sites so maby the info isnt reliable in all the cases but this seems good.

Check out the part in bold that I have underlined. Its what struck me as most interesting. If it also can increase a healthy, normal nutrition uptake not only restore a diminished one then it would be a priceless adition.

Does anyone know anything about this? I know hempseed products can be bought in sweden but is it illegal in the states?

http://www.digitalhemp.com/eecdrom/HTML/EMP/08/ECH08_01.HTM

Of the 3 million plus edible plants that grow on earth, no other single plant source can compare with the nutritional value of hempseeds. Both the complete protein and the essential oil contained in hempseeds are in ideal ratios for human nutrition.
Only soybeans contain a higher percentage of protein. However, the composition of the protein in hempseed is unique in the vegetable kingdom. Sixty-five percent of the protein content in hempseed is in the form of globulin edestin.1 (The word edestin comes from the Greek “edestos,” meaning edible.)

1. Walker, David W., Ph.D., “Can Hemp Save Our Planet?”, citing St. Angelo, A.J., E.J. Conkerton, J.M. Dechary, and A.M. Altschul, 1966, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, vol. 121, pp. 181; St. Angelo, A., L.y. Yatsu. and A.M. Altschul. 1968, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, vol. 124, pp. 199-205; Stockwell, D.M., J.M. Dechary, and A.M. Altschul, 1964, Biochimica Biophysica Acta, vol. 82 pp. 221.

The exceptionally high edestin content of hempseed combined with albumin, another globular protein contained in all seeds, means the readily available protein in hempseed contains all the essential amino acids in ideal proportions to assure your body has the necessary building blocks to create proteins like disease fighting immunoglobulins—antibodies whose job is to ward off infections before the symptom of sickness set in.2

2. Morroson, R.T., Organic Chemistry, 1960; Kimber, Gray, Stackpole, Textbook of Anatomy and Physiology, 1943.

Cannabis seed protein even allows a body with nutrition-blocking tuberculosis, or almost any other nutrition-blocking ailment, to get maximum nourishment.*

Even more important to building a strong immune system, hempseeds are the highest source in the plant kingdom of essential fatty acids. These essential oils, linoleic and linolenic acids, are responsible for the luster in your skin, hair, eyes, and even your thought processes. They lubricate (clear) the arteries and are vital to the immune system.

These essential fatty acids were used by Dr. Joanna Budwig (nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since 1979) to successfully treat “terminal” cancer patients, as well as those suffering from cardiovascular disease, glandular atrophy, gall stones, kidney degeneration, acne, dry skin, menstrual problems, and immune deficiency.

This, as well as other research, prompted William Eidleman, M.D., UCLA, and R. Lee Hamilton, Ed.D., Ph.D., Medical Researcher-Biochemist UCLA Emeritus, to speak out on behalf of “the life-giving values” of cannabis hemp. They state:

“These essential oils support the immune system and guard against viral and other insults to the immune system. Studies are in progress using the essential oils to support the immune systems of people with the H.I.V. virus. So far they have been extremely promising.

“What is the richest source of these essential oils? Yes, you guessed it, the seeds of the cannabis hemp plant. … The insane prohibitions against the most valuable plant on Earth, cannabis hemp, must yield to public demand. … The promise of super health and the possibility of feeding the world is at our fingertips.” (December 29, 1991, and July 1997)

Hempseed extracts, like soybean, can be spiced to taste like chicken, steak, or pork and can be used to make tofu-type curd and margarine, at less cost than soybeans. Sprouting any seed improves its nutritional value and hemp can be sprouted and used like any other seed sprout for salads or cooking.

Sprouted hempseeds make milk, just as soybeans do. Alan “Birdseed” Brady of Santa Cruz, California, and Abba Das of Colorado use this milk to make a delicious and nutritious ice cream in many flavors that actually lowers cholesterol levels.

Hempseed is ground and used like flour, or cooked, then sweetened and combined with milk to produce a nutritional breakfast cereal—like oatmeal or cream of wheat. This type of porridge is known as a gruel. (Like the fiber, hempseeds will not get you high.)

“Hemp is a favorite [bird seed] because of its nourishing oily content.” (Margaret McKenny, Birds in the Garden, Reynal & Hitchcock, NY, 1939.) Incredibly, when cannabis hemp is grown for seed, half the weight of the mature, harvested female plant is seed!

English and European fishermen who cast in fresh-water lakes and rivers told me since 1995 that hempseed has always been the preferred bait in Europe for chumming—that is, casting the hempseeds on the water—causing the fish to scramble from all over to get the seeds, thereby getting caught. Not one of the European fishermen I talked to knew that hemp (hanf) seeds and marijuana were one in the same. So hempseed is the favorite of fish as well as most birds.

The byproduct of pressing hempseed for its nutritious vegetable oil is a high protein seed cake. Hempseed cake was one of the world’s principle animal feeds until this century.* Hempseed can supply a nearly complete diet for all domesticated animal (dogs, cats), many farm animals, and poultry, and allows animals maximum weight gain for less than current feed costs. And without any need for artificial growth steroids or other drugs currently poisoning the human race and food chain.

*U.S. Agricultural Index; Frazier, Jack, The Marijuana Farmers, Solar Age Press, New Orleans, LA, 1972; Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill, Udo, Erasmus, 1996.

Isn’t it strange—doesn’t it make you mad as hell—that the number-one food of all time for most birds, fish, horses, humans, and life in general, is illegal to have naturally and healthfully in the United States of America, as ordered by the Nazi/Gestapo-like Amerikan Drug Enforcement Administration and, through them, the USDA?

hemp oil seems to have a beneficial profile that may warrant its use but since I already use high amounts of Fish Oil, I prefer the profile of Avocado oil which I think the BB community is not even stopping to look at... very good stuff.

Do you have any good info on avacado oil? I usualy eat avacado as a fatsource but I thought it was mostly rich in mct oils

About the hemp besides the perfect fat profile I was more thinking about the ability to increase/restore the uptake of nutrients. If what pouiliquin writes is true about protein allergies(the other thread I started a few days ago) then maby hemp seed could be used to counter that effect.

Avocado oil is a rich source of beta-sitosterol, which lowers cholesterol by inhibiting absorption of LDL, alleviates the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, may help to prevent some cancers, lower blood glucose, and improve immune response.

According to USDA Food and Nutrition Information Center it's fatty acid profile is
very similar to olive oil:

Avocado oil

saturated 11.6%
monounsaturated 70.6%
PUFAs 13.5%
(of which omega-6 12.5%)

Olive oil

saturated 13.5%
monounsaturated 73.7%
PUFAs 8.4%
(of which omega-6 7.9%)

It has, however, much higher smoking and flash points than olive oil.

I am not in sales. I do not want to be sales. I am not affiliated with this company. However heres a source, and a good one at that.

Dont wanna eat them? Spread em...

Peter McClure, Chief Executive of New Zealand Dairy Foods says, "We believe
in leading the market through innovation and are excited to be launching"
the spread, called Avezzo.

The olive spread market currently accounts for 14.8 percent of the total
spreads market, with sales increasing more than 11.9 percent year on year,
according to market researchers. The new spread offers consumers the taste
and health benefits of an olive oil spread enhanced with the unique health benefits of Avocado Oil.Avocado oil contains significant levels of the natural plant compound beta sitosterol, which inhibits the absorption of cholesterol in the blood stream.

Dairy Foods is excited by their new product and they believe that the development of a product that offers the unique health benefits of both Avocado and Olive Oil will grow the market significantly. They are launching Avezzo in New Zealand, and after that, they will be looking at opportunities to take this example to the international market.

And it you rather not use the oil, just eat the damn avocados.

California avocados are the highest fruit source of vitamin E and contain twice the amount previously reported, according to a study conducted in 2001, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

These impressive results along with earlier findings that California avocados rank highest among fruits in at least three phytochemicals, eight vitamins, and two minerals make them unique in their nutrient profile. California avocados have a standout status among commonly eaten fruits. The UCLA data shows that a 100-gram portion of California avocado has 4.31 IU of vitamin E, compared to 1.67, 1.33 and 1.04 in kiwifruit, nectarines and grapes, respectively. Other common fruits contain lesser amounts.

Vitamin E functions as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants works as "mops" to clean up free radicals that results from the body¹s metabolic processes. If left to circulate in the body, the free radicals can damage cells and this is believed to be a cause of cancer and heart disease and to contribute to aging.

As an antioxidant, vitamin E keeps company and works with many other
disease-fighting chemicals and basic nutrients found in food. In the California
avocado this includes:

*BETA-SITOSTEROL*syntherol California avocados have more than four times as much beta-sitosterol as oranges, which had previously been reported as the richest known fruit source of this phytochemical. Beta sitosterol is a phytochemical that inhibits cholesterol absorption and promotes lower serum cholesterol levels.

Glutathione syntherol California avocados provide more than three times the glutathione as any other fruit where the glutathione content is known. Glutathione is an antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer.

Lutein syntherol California avocados are the highest fruit source of lutein among the 20 most frequently consumed fruits with known values.Lutein is a pytochemical known to protect against macular degeneration and cataracts.

Vitamins syntherol California avocados contain more thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, vitamin E, folic acid vitamin K and pantothenic acid than any of the other 20 most frequently consumed raw fruits.

Minerals syntherol California avocados contain more potassium and magnesium than bananas or any of the other 20 most frequently consumed raw fruits.

If you're just discovering avocados, here are some buying and preparation hints:

Test for ripeness with a gentle squeeze. If the fruit yields to pressure but doesn't remain dented, it's ripe. A firm avocado will ripen in a few days sitting on a kitchen counter.

To cut an avocado, slice it lengthwise around the seed and rotate the halves to separate. Lift the seed out with a spoon and then peel the fruit with a knife (or your fingers) -- or just scoop out the avocado meat with a spoon.

A cut avocado will turn brown. Squeeze some lemon juice on the cut if you aren't eating it right away. If an area turns brown, just scrape it off. Avocados are relatively high in calories -- about 300 for a whole avocado.

Some of this stuff is redundant/repeat info but just stuff I found on an A-oil post I wrote a while back...

Finally...

Avocados have also been shown to contain high levels of the natural plant compound beta-sitosterol, a member of the phytosterol family. The clean and unpolluted growing conditions found in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region provide the highest levels of beta-sitosterol in the world for oil extracted from the avocado. Avocados grown elsewhere typically average 750mg per 100g content versus 950mg per 100g content for Bay of Plenty fruit. When comparing these levels against olive oil, long recognized as a superior oil in terms of health, New Zealand grown avocados more than triple the beta-sitosterol levels of the very best olive oils.

Beta-sitosterol has an apparent ability to block the 'bad' LDL cholesterol absorption from the intestine, resulting in lower blood cholesterol levels. In addition, avocado oil is highly recommended for its high level of heart healthy monounsaturated fat, predominantly Oleic Acid, which accounts for more than 70% of each 100g. By using avocado oil on a regular basis in conjunction with a healthy diet, you can help your body to maintain a good cholesterol balance.

From a nutritional and culinary perspective avocado oil offers a number of advantages over olive oils traditionally used for food preparation and enhancement. Because of the chemical properties and viscosity of our oil you can use as little as half the oil normally required when using a fine olive oil in some cooking applications. Avocado oil also has a very high burn/smoke point of over 500 degrees Fahrenheit against 374 degrees Fahrenheit for olive oil, an important difference when searing or frying meat and vegetables in a stir fry. This means that when cooking the oil will not "burn" away!

good stuff gonna have to buy some avacado oil. Or eat more avacados but they are pricy over here :(

Does the oil have to be refrigerated or does it share oliv oils stability?

Its delicate but as long as there is no contact with air or light it should be fine. To note the company I have linked makes a spray as well that offers the same health benfits as the oil.

This edible oil is an ideal candidate for the Mediterranean diet as it is predominantly monounsaturated and is low in saturates. It has an added benefit in that it contains beta-sitosterol in significant amounts (0.5-1.0%) and the consumption of this cholesterol lowering sterol is being encouraged worldwide. Beta-Sitosterol may also have further benefits for most males over fifty in alleviating the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) (6). Saw palmetto extract finds a credible acceptance around the world for this treatment and the active ingredient in the extract is beta-sitosterol, which is at a concentration of 0.2% in the extract. The daily dosage for efficacy is between 60 and 100 mg per day when administered as a drug. This equates to taking 10-15 gram per day of avocado oil an intake totally in keeping with a healthy lifestyle. Research into the mechanism does not yet appear complete but there have been sufficient clinical trials to confirm the effect. The suggested mode of action involves inhibition of the steroid enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme reduces testosterone in the prostate to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This reaction produces a hormone imbalance, which causes a progressive thickening of the epithelial and fibromuscular structures within the prostate gland. The resultant hyperplasia causes obstruction resulting in abnormal urinary functions. In the ageing process levels of testosterone fall whereas DHT remains high. Beta- sitosterol is reported to reduce the uptake of both testosterone and DHT and also inhibits the conversion reaction. Daguet recently reviewed the exciting potential for phytosterols in Lipid technology (7).
An interesting observation has been made by some consumers about the satiety effects of taking approximately 10 ml of avocado oil as a smoothie in the morning with reports that this alleviated the desire for mid morning snacks.

You say Advocado has a higher flash point than Olive oil. So - is this a better choice to use as a cooking oil?

I didn't see this earlier - it answers my question.

the members of this board never stops suprising me with the wealth of information they have.

getting this back to hemp and hempseeds...

I know there is bird food that is 100% hemp seeds. Would this be okay for human consumption? It would be alot cheaper then to buy hemp seeds from the healthstores that is for sure.

You pot smoking Hippies. :) JK

Steele was referring to a porn spammer on this thread. That post is gone and so is he.

Thanks, Steel!

I like my avocados fairly ripe. Sprinkle some salt and eat is slowly. It has a nice nutty flavour, at least to me, and the salt adds to it.

Seems avocados hijacked the thread... lol

I went through a phase of being vegetarian. Combine that with not caring for soy as the vast majority of positive studies were paid by the soy industry, and I found myself needing a compete protein powder. Enter hemp protein powder. It was a savior for me. The protein powder I used also had potato and pea protein to help balance it out, if I remember correctly. I also don't mind fermented soy products in moderation.

Hemp is a wonderful plant and it's too bad that it has been purposefully associated with marijuana. It was pushed to be scheduled together with marijuana back in the day due to economic interests.

As for the birdseed, I can't think of a reason that you wouldn't be able to eat them. Ask the store if it is alright if your dog eats them because sometimes your dog tears open your bag and eat things... (If you can't tell, I don't own a dog. I'm sure you can come up with a better line than that, but that might help ease your mind.)

I am allergic to all dairy and soy products so my only option is Hemp or Almond milk which I now like the taste of. You can buy Hemp hearts and sprinkly it on foods, they have a sweet taste almost like wheatgerm. Hemp foods are popular here in Canada. Hemp protein shakes are popular too.
