Best antivirus?

I am using the trial version of Avast internet security and so far not bad. There is also AVG , kaspersky and zonealarm that are good but heavy on resourses. Check these out at download.com

avast

Avast if your looking for free but nothing beats Norton's stand alone anti virus IMHO.

My first thought when I saw the title was "condom".

I do have to agree though I like norton pretty well.

I prefer the scan engine on Spyware Doctor w/ Antivirus, it finds more stuff than anything else I have ever used. You can't remove stuff with the free version, but knowing it's there is the important part. Low resource utilization too.

norton sucks the fat one, avast is good for free, bit defender is fucking great, so is eset smart security suite, spysweeper is good but a little heavy on resources

if your gonna pay then kaspersky is the best out there. they use to have a crack for it but has been locked down. if i get a chance ill look and see if its been cracked yet.

NOD32 is the best IMHO. I would also trust Kaspersky as well. Norton and McAfee and AVG are total garbage.

The best out there is to just get a Mac and forget about it.
I finally got sick of junk PC's and all the hassles several years ago, bought a Mac laptop that has been online pretty much 24/7 for around 5 years no with no antivirus at all and no problems.

One time after clicking something from some shady porn site or something I got a prompt asking me if I wanted to install some kind of file. Since I wasn't trying to install any file I simply clicked no and exited the site. With windows, it would of auto installed and I'd most likely have the latest virus.

The people that spread those rumors that "macs get viruses" either don't use a a mac, or are just so dumb that they give it permission to install one when it asks them if they want to.

Funny, I just removed a spambot off a mac yesterday. First spambot we've ever gotten, on our only mac, in a building running ...Windows.

Now, as a side effect of people like you, there are no decent anti-virus programs for Macs. With all the Mac users thinking viruses don't exists, they wouldn't install (much less pay for) any anti-virus, so why would there be?

Windows gets a virus: you remove it. 5 minutes or less for 95% of them.
Mac gets a virus: you're fucked. 95% of the time.

been online pretty much 24/7 for around 5 years no with no antivirus at all and no problems.

Ignorance is bliss.

i use spybot, spywareblaster and avast..................what is spyware doctor? never heard of that

and yeah, norton is a joke , shame on you

I pay and use Trend Micro - don't know how it stacks up to others but my PC has been pretty clean for a couple years now.

I let the subscription lapse once - got a nasty one. Once it was in Trend couldn't get rid of it. But I downloaded a free program called "Malwarebytes". Kicked the virus and a bunch of other stuff to boot.

trend micro is pretty weak, when a free program like malwarebytes can get rid of something.... that tells a tale ;)

On Windows I'd go with AVG freeware. It's lightweight and won't slow your system down as much as some of the other AV products, is FREE, gets regular updates, and has good detection according to virustotal.

On a side tangent...but still relevant to this thread's topic of security, here are some other precautions that I listed in a previous thread that I think are very useful. Security is a layered approach. Even with the *best* AV, bad things can happen if a user isn't being smart.

  1. Install operating system (OS) and software updates! Updates fix security problems with your operating system and software programs.
  2. Install anti-virus. As mentioned above, I'd personally use AVG Freeware.
  3. Consider running anti-spyware, such as Ad-Aware.
  4. Turn on your computer's firewall. Enable the native firewall on Windows (depending on version), or install a third party firewall like Zone Alarm. Home router might also provide firewall like protection depending on how it's configured.
  5. Use a secure web browser. If you haven't already, I'd install Firefox or Chrome as your browser. If you go with Firefox, install the NoScript plugin.
  6. Use complex passwords and keep them secret (obvious).
  7. Protect your passwords. Store your passwords in a software password safe, like 1password.
  8. Send sensitive emails securely. Use PGP to encrypt email (assuming your recipient also has PGP)
  9. Remember physical security. Don't leave laptops laying around.
  10. Lock your computer screen. This helps prevent others from accessing your computer when you're not around.
  11. Protect what's yours. Don't use shared logins on your computer and consider installing an application like truecrypt to encrypt and protect sensitive documents on your computer.
  12. Safe emailing.Don't open attachments in email that you weren't expecting.
  13. Be cautious when using the Internet.Be careful of the links you click on while surfing ... and be extremely cautious of what you download. AV will help with some of this, as well as the NoScript plugin in Firefox...as well as Chrome.
  14. Backups! Be sure to backup important files.
  15. Anonymous surfing. Use a free proxy to surf anonymously online, like hidemyass com.
