Best back in bodybuilding history?

Ronnie Coleman IMO has/had the best back. The most muscle.

But honestly I like the backs of some of the smaller bodybuilders better...Like Shawn Ray...Dexter Jackson...Lee Priest..Dave Henry ..Flex Wheeler...Kevin Lavrone just to name a few.

And Yates...was just tons and tons of muscle...no question about it.

Yates without a doubt had the best back when he was in his prime.
Don't get it twisted Ronnie back is inhuman, but just doesn't have the same awe inspiring detail that Yates did.

Plus Yates set the new standard for bodybuilding. Everything past him is just copy of that.

Mohammed Benaziza. Other guys had bigger and thicker backs, sure, but no one comes close to this level of development.

Crazy, full Kevin Levrone/Vince Taylor-like biceps too.

Don't forger Kai. He's definitely up there!

Heath for detail and YAtes for thickness

It's really only between Ronnie and Dorian Yates. I think Yates had better conditioning throughout his career so his back might have appeared harder and more detailed but I think Ronnie beats decisively in the Back Double Biceps pose (only person who can even come close to Ronni in BDB was Flex Wheeler). In Rear Lat Spread I think Ronnie slightly edges Dorian but not by much.

I'll take Haney in third. After that it's very hard to say as you have guys that had awesome backs like Bannout, Mike Francois, Mike Christian, Flex, Kai, Albert Beckles but could not really match the other three IMO. Orville Burke had a helluva Lat Spread too but not the best BDB.

Samir Bannout the year he won the Olympia.

This is exactly my pet peeve with todays bodybuilding, MOMO looks fine unreal! THE DETAIL!!!

NO BODYBUILDER today has that lower lat tie in like MOMO & especially Samir!!

why????????

Yates.i would say no contest but Ronnie’s back was on/near the same level.

That's why I selected him. I tried to be as objective as possible. It's clear that some people are just selecting their favourites.

You have to pause those videos because he doesn't hold the poses long enough, but Momo's development is in another league. It's a genetic thing too. He did the same exercises as everyone else, but there's muscles showing on him that don't on anyone else. The length of his rhomboids on his frame are crazy and his teres major/infraspinatus tie-in and development is unreal.

Gotta go with Coleman. Agree with the guy who said you can't not include Kai Greene in the conversation.

Franco Columbu had a crazy back for back in the day. He deadlifted 750 at 179 lbs.

Yates more defined and slabs of muscle esp after the 92 Olympia. from 92 to 93 he added like 18 lbs stage weight, he overdid in 92, and I wouldnt be surprised if 5 of those pounds was put on his back, he trained his back hard.

Ronnie may have had a bigger back in terms of overall size.

It depends on the shot. Kai has tons of bulk mass on his frame, but his shape and the way he carries it is odd.

Phil crushes him in this pose. Kai's back is very smooth and almost looks like flab hanging over his christmas tree.

Strydom Syndrome

On another note, for thickness, we can't forget Francois. It's a shame his career ended shortly. Insane legs and a fairly tight midsection for a guy weighing in the 240's
