Predisone packs are the shit! They make all your pains go away, and I strongly suggest you discuss it with your doctor.
My only other advise is the following:
1. Ice for those discs. I fall asleep with a gel pack underneath a towel.
2. Stretch. For example - tight quads are especially detrimental to the lower back.
3. Core work
4. Active Release Technique Therapy
5. Find out what movements aggravate your injuries the most. Avoid those movements completely. For example....I cannot squat, however thankfully I can still deadlift.
