That's my hometown!!
I could write a book on what to see and do, but....pick up brochures at your hotel, look on the web, etc. But I haven't lived there in a while, just visits, so I'm a little sketchy on resturants and such.
Most of the sites, restaurants, etc. are downtown in the historic section. Most of the restuarants and nightlife generally south of Calhoun St., esp. in the Market area and along East Bay St. . The beautiful historic area is south of Broad St. and a couple blocks north of it. One thing you MUST do is walk all the way south on King or Meeting Street (maybe down one then back up the other) to the Battery (the sea wall at the tip of the harbor). It's stunning.
A couple of the old mansions are open for tours, alwsays interesting (I recomment the Heyward-Washington House (on Meeting St., I think) . If you are interested in history, go to Fort Moultrie (across the Cooper River, it's cool, right on the beach) or Fort Sumter (cool boat ride to get out there). There are also Plantations you can go to....I recommend Boone Hall. Also very cool is the maritime museum just across the Cooper River..they have several different kind of ships you can tour (self tour), esp. the aircraft carrier the Yorktown. Very cool. If the weather's good, a carriage tour downtown will give you a nice overview.
Restaurants: Poogan's Porch on Queen St. is in an old house and offers local cuisine...casual.
Gyms: Across the Ashley River, West Ashley Aerobic and Fitness, and Pivitol Fitness are both OK for real lifters. (There used to be a kick-ass hardcore gym, Tre's, but it closed.) There is a new-ish Gold's further out Folly Rd. toward Folly Beach, and there may be some new Gold's by now.
