Hey everyone I have a question and this my have been addressed before but why do some people DL bare foot?

Also I've noticed a good amount of pain in my feet that may be caused by heavy calf lifts, mainly if I've been sitting for a while and get up you can feel it as you are walking. Do I need to cut back in weight? This kind of relates to my first question because I wondered if DL bare foot was better than your foot being inside a shoe.

Thanks,
Razer

I would say no. i tried deadlifting bare foot and you should have the support from a good pair of shoes. if you dont i think you could run the risk of collapsing an arch or tear somethin in your foot. my .02

I use chuck taylors for all my leg routines. completely flat sole front to back but just enough arch support to do it thing. I have noticed less knee pain since I have been using them.... 3 yrs now.

i remove my shoes for squats as they are kind of running shoes and throw my balance way off if i dont. Ive never done it for deadlifts though. Are these people doing them barefoot removing like basketball shoes with the huge air pockets in the heel? If so, thats probably why they are taking them off. Those air pockets crush with very minimal weight and throw your balance way off. As far as a lifting advantage, i dont see one.

I've deadlifted in my socks with no problem. I usually wear wrestling shoes for DL and squat. My arches are quite high and have never bothered me.

My pain may come from calf lifts..

I might be going too heavy with calf raises. I do full range of motion and that may be too much strain on my arch. I've also noticed the pads of my feet will be sore from time to time but I think thats a shoe issue. I did replace the souls in my Otomix shoes with gel inserts. I'm taking a good week off maybe two to see how all the pains subside.

The reason I ask about the bare foot deal is because I've seen several people that seem to like it "bare"....weight lifting that is. I just wanted others take on the deal. I'll stick with the shoes though.

I always use a hard sole boot. I think bare feet would be fine. Any shoe with with a soft sole or gel insert will absorb some of your drive to the floor which is not what you want if you are looking for max power.

people pull with no shoes on because it gets them closer to the ground, thus making the pull a lot easier. eventhough it may only be an inch or so difference in height, it can add extra pounds to your deadlift. i deadlift in chucks, and squat in squat shoes/boots.

Me too. Just leave them in my gym bag- i dont wear them outa the gym.

ALWAYS deadlift barefoot. when doing such a heavy exercise you need to be balanced perfectly. there exists NO shoe on earth that can compare with millions of years of evolution, and our feet have been designed by evolution to perfectly balance us. this is my opinion on deadlifting, unfotunately i always get some 130lb salesman at the gym running up to me and telling me i have to wear shoes. i ignore them :)

I agree.. I notice a better feel and better balance with no shoes...... you pretty much sumed it up!

There are also quite a few accomplished powerlifters that DL in slippers.
That is about as close to barefoot as one can get in a meet...

My thoughts exactly.

Chuck's or wrestling shoes, lower to the ground= less distance to lift. J.R

I am one more who likes deadlifting in socks, slippers or wrestling shoes and for years liked to squat that way pritty often, but now swear by olympic shoes for squating as they give you a better solid balanced feeling along with arch support and better geometry.

But back to the second part of your question, it deffinately sounds like your calf training is the arch pain culprit, that is the most likely way to colapse your arch, ask some of the BBers on here if they been at it long and train calfs heavy they probly have flat feet like most pros.

Socks work for me. Helps you to feel the floor better and isolate the center of your strength.

Anterior tilt

Wearing shoes, boots, etc. may give a physical feeling of comfort (which does help psychologically lift weight) however, they cause the hip to have an anterior tilt. This requires more work to bring the hip into neutral position at the top, besides increasing the range of motion needed to get there (which brings us back to requiring more work/energy).
