Alright, so there have been a lot of diet threads lately (dc style, montaindog, foodfreak, phil, etc) i know they cant really get into specifics because people pay good money to have them do up a diet. but basically, what is your choice for a diet method (when it comes to growing):

A) (nutrient density)
Lower carb diet, even lower for cutting, moderate to high fat/protein

OR

B) BIG eating. Eating, and eating lots. (Not crap, good food. whole foods, shakes, limited processed foods. its not about getting fat, but growing at the "fastest rate possible" (and fat gains will come)

(and fat gains will come)

question: is that an in principle point or an in practice point? In principle could somebody adjust their caloric intake to such a precise degree that they made the EXACT SAME muscular gains but virtually eliminated fat gains? Or is maximal muscle gains correlated with fat gains more tightly?

I know the point is often phrased as an 'in practice' point...that you just won't be able to adjust your calories that precisely to minimize fat gain completely while still retaining the optimal growing conditions...but what IF in principle you could adjust your calories this precisely?

that would be damn amazing.

the rate of fat gain (speed/amount) will depend on how many calories, carb intake, cardio, many many things. youre not literally TRYING to put on fat. but, it will come eventually, maybe only a little, maybe a lot. depending on how youre actually dieting.

Well

I do not prescribe to either system......FoodFreak and I have 90% similar diets....100% similar during contest time......... I am more Dantes at times of the year.........about 75% similar to DC....I suppose.

do you think the amount of fat can be limited to keeping your bodyfat percentages the same as you grow (so you will gain MORE fat but your bodyfat would never shift from 10% since your overall weight would be increasing)? Or will bodyfat percentages inevitably increase as you make the MOST OPTIMAL muscle gains?

well, i suppose it still depends on the above factors, as well as the individual. i trained a guy once, took him from 142 to 172 in 3 months, and his body fat only went up 1% (from 7%-8%). damn genetics.

Neither!

There are so many factors to consider, but a lower carb lifestyle is the one for me. 50-100g of carbs on a cut, 150-300 on the way up. If I eat more than that, I get sluggish. If I didn't work out, I'd totally be a fatty though, I'm not one of those naturally lean people.

Big eating works for people on cycle, with excellent hormonal profiles, cardio freaks, and for people who have trouble eating enough calories.

NONE OF THE ABOVE.

High protein, moderate carbohydrates(low GI), low fats.

Carbohydrates are NOT EVIL! It really surprises me that people are still under this gross misconception..

None of the above also,
I'm high carb, med protine, low fat........

I agree with this.

what type of diet do you follow, pesty?
long time no talk btw.

For off season: high protein, high carbs, moderate fats ( right now 40/40/20)

For contest: high protein, moderate carbs, low fat (to get shredded 50/35/15)

I do believe in proper nutrients, but not a fan of low carb diets.

Exactly the same as Pesty on this.

woops

i now realize i forgot to include another form of dieting in this poll, low fat, mod-high carbs/protein. my bad.
good posts so far.

Mountain Dog diet

My personal belief is moderate everything...not low carbs, not low fat...the right carbs and especially fats is what will make you most healthy, and you CAN get shredded with higher fats...the only thing I am again is low fat...and of course low protein.. :)

JM

I would have to agree with Pesty. I have been trying to enjoy the low carb, high protien, high/moderate fat. But my body doesn't seem to enjoy too much. I seem to pack on more fat even thought it is fewer calories. Seems like I can keep my carbs moderater/high with low fats and I am leaner.

Neither for me. My diet may seem weird, but it works well for me and I feel best without carbs. Its not a struggle at all.

High protein, High fat, Low carbs (100 grams or less). I make up the missing carb calories from good fats; almond butter, Omega 3's, Olive oil, natty peanut butter (if nothing else is available).

After LOTS of experimentation, it seems my body just hates carbs.

The above is best when I'm training without AAS.

With AAS ("low" doses relative to many vets here), I up overall cals a bit and add another 100 grams of carbs e/d. or eod depending on how I feel. Gains are good, as long as cals are kept high enough.

High protein, SUPER high carbs, low fat. As long as I watch my fat intake I can eat as much of the other two as I desire and never get fat.

Neither for me. I rather get my energy from carbs and use a lower to moderate fat. Carbs are under rated imo. Carbs should be clean ones and cut them down when u want to lean out. The best is to carb cycle and switch your ratios of carbs/ fats up. I belive in counting calories so you know what to add and subtract. Keto diets arent for me and i dont think they are good for bbers but some get good results from them( mainy guys who eat like shit in the off season and get to fat and get into the speed race game losing fat cuase they are so behind).

Key is never to get over 12% or 9-10% even better.

p.s for myself when i take in my meals i usually dont mix carbs in fats together. So high carb/low fat and moderate fat/ no carbs usaully at night.
