Thoughts on Bacon?

I have a mild heart condition since birth. Every 6 months I see a very reputable cardiologist. He actually founded the heart clinic that I go to. We had a discussion on bacon and he went on a 15 minute rant about just how bad it was for me to eat it. He threw tons of research at me to prove his point and I'm not trying to discredit him by any means, just seeing what other people's opinions are about the subject. He said it's a processed meat so it's deemed a carcinogen, he said after it's heated it becomes even more carcinogenic and even though it has no carbs the saturated fats can cause type 2 diabetes. Any thoughts?
No it can't cause diabetes. Health issues don't come from specific foods they come from being too fat.
Your heart dr is repeating utter nonsense

Couldn’t agree more.

However at least you’re getting a tangible positive from gear use.

May or may not come with a little or a lot of negatives depending on how competent one is

Besides getting your tastebuds tickled for a minute, bacon is only negatives

And it’s not like this is apples to apples here either. I don’t really know what the connection to gear use and bacon consumption is
lol tastebuds tickled is a good one.

I wasn’t meaning the two topics being justified were apple to apples. Rather comparing the mental gymnastics of justification. Regardless, I’m very firmly in the camp of it’s your personal choice on both topics. They dont affect me, and won’t unless you happen to end up at my place of work. In which case I too would defend the use of gear over large quantities of bacon.

Bacon itself won't cause diabetes. What his doctor is referring to is large amounts of saturated fat can lead to insulin resistance which can end up in diabetes.

Well I'm going to fuck everyone up. I raise my own chickens and I get a lot of eggs. Couple times a week I par cook some crumpled bacon, about an ounce, with spinach til the spinach is loose. Then make a circle with the spinach and place the bacon bits in the middle so it's like a walled city. Then 3 farm fresh eggs go in in the middle. Cover until just about done sunny side up and then sprinkle about 1/2 oz grated Parmesan cheese. Serve when cheese is just melted.

That actually sounds pretty good.

I think people may have overlooked that the OP has a genetic heart condition.

Knowing this is it likely best he avoid saturated fats? I personally think so.

I will put a disclaimer in my signature.

It's not saturated fats in and of themselves though. It's that most people who eat alot of bacon tend to be fat.
Saturated eaten in a large amounts will not cause diabetes.
There's only one way to cause high insulin resistance and that's from being too fat for a normal person.
There's no non obese person with high levels of insulin resistance except for bodybuilders who may have induced it through drug use

(TLR-4) receptor activation
Diacylglycerol accumulation
Ceramide production

Go research saturated fats roles on those items and see if you still feel the same.

And the obvious one of course is that saturated fats are inflammatory.

Nobody is denying that being obese is a contributing factor. But saturated fats will absolutely get you to IR and diabetes quickly if eaten in excess.

I have and it's correlative data that shows any real world
connection to diabetes or ir.
You can improve ir eating saturated fats if you're losing fat and in a caloric deficit. It would be impossible become more insulin resistant.

People have been pounding bacon since the introduction of the Atkins diet.
There is no food that is inherently harmful or bad for you.
Gaining body fat is what causes metabolic issues not a specific food.
Drs are some of the worst people to give out nutrition advice.

Hey I guess we all need to believe what we believe.

I agree most doctors are the worst to give our nutrition advice.

Only people who have studied nutrition and food sciences should be doing that.

Hold up, do you think diabetes only presents when someone is fat? :ROFLMAO: Or any other health issues for that matter.........

Personally I eat very low total fat a day. 3g of dha 1g of epa and 2g of ala are my only added fats.
I don't eat any high fat foods. Our daily fat recommendations were based on the average American diet in order to get the right amount of necessary fats.
I think high fat diets are a waste of calories.
Just to make it clear that I'm not defending some love of bacon and sausage or saturated fats in general.
I'm an advocate low fat, high carb, moderate protein diets

You’re good man. I think both arguments could be made and do exist-

Being obese can lead to diabetes.

Eating excess saturated fats can accelerate the process of developing IR and diabetes.

So many factors come into play with the human body and nutrition.

Thee ole Maillard reaction creating the nasty byproducts towards AGEs (advanced glycation end products) purportedly promoting the formation of atherosclerotic plaque.

Do you eat chicken? I promise you they are much filthier animals than pigs.
nope...no chicken (well I should say extremely rare I include chicken). I agree with your sentiment. I also don't have any hard scientific data. It's really more of my preference related to taste and how and I feel so I stick to red meat and seafood. Often a lot of wild game is included in my diet.
