I'm on the market right now for a new digital camera. I'm a REAL tightass when it comes to spending money on things like this, however I do want a decent camera this time. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two camera's:

Fuji S5100 4.0MP 10x Optical 3.6 Digital Zoom 1.5" LCD Screen $296.67

HP PS945 5.3MP 8x Optical 7x Digital Zoom 2" LCD Screen $397.63
(Comes With Docking Station and 128mb Memory Card)

Obviously there is a $100 difference between the two but with the HP it seems that your getting a little more camera plus the docking station/memory card.

Can any of the camera gurus here at PM give me some sound advice on purchasing a new camera?

..

there is a certain level of megapixel that the eye can no longer detect..

find out what that level is and dont waste $ on a camera that takes pictures at a higher resolution than that really.

I had a HP digi cam used it for a couple years worked great, I have a kodak easy share now, it does what I need you can find it now for under 200.00 its has 4.23 Megapixels - Zoom: 4 X Digital , 3 X Optical and it has a 5 star review by consumers..

Buy Nikon they specialize in Cameras thats whatb i have only 3200 mega pixels but thats all your gonna be needing ,, my Cam is called Nikon coolpix 3200. it also takes my videos as well and the quality is pretty good.

spend the grand on the sony with the carl zeiss lens. you got the money, and i know you just want it so you can print up full size posters of yourself. I own it and it's a great camera... however if you only want to go to 8x10 4 mp is just fine. Also with all the self service stations accept damn near any memory card these days.

what do you want it for? Is it just for you and personal pics? or do you have professional reasons?

are you planning on printing these pics yourself on a photo printer or just for emails, etc? or professional development?

Reason i ask is because the visible differences in Megapixel count are in the 4-5 mp range. I played with many cams and printed a number of trial pics in a couple of stores to see the difference for myself. Oh and if you want to do anything large format (blow pics up, 11x17, etc) the pixels matter. But for 5x7 prints 4mp or 5mp is similar in appearance. There were shit load of other things i wanted to be able to do... so in the end I got a Canon Powershot Pro 1 - 8 mp, great cam, but more than u want to spend.

Dude, I have the fuji camera, its awesome. Except I paid almost 400 bucks for it when it first came out. I don't think you would be dissappointed with the camera, it takes great pics. The software it comes with is awesome too. pm me if you have any questions...

Not for sure if you have a Sam's Club where you live. I received an awesome digital camera from a client. It was over $150 cheaper than the "elf". It is made from vivitar....has 6.2 megapixels and takes great shots. It was right around $300. Well worth it in my opinion. Real easy software to use too. Take a look over there first and do some research on the internet. I dont have alot of knowledge when it comes to cameras, but everyone who has seen the pics from this camera....their like wooo!!! Hope this helps..

I have a Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 and love the thing. It has anti shake x12 optical zoom. You can take a shot within a half inch of an object and you can also take anywhere from 15 to 30 shots per second. Never miss that shot! You can also record video... Cjay

I'll be using it for professional use and family photos. I have a 3.1 megapixel right now but I'm not happy with it at all. Tight, close up shots are very poor but I believe that it's due to this camera having NO optical zoom.
