Digital Photography help

I give up. Either im a retard or something is wrong. I bought a pretty damn good digital 4.0 Problem is when i take pictures either the flash drowns me out and destroys every bit of shadow leavin me look like a shapless fatboy, or i turn the flash off and i guess the auto shudder stays upen too long and the pic gets blurry not to menton dark. Only daylight works well, but what if i wanna take pix at night?
