drinking alcohol and losing weight

hey guys,

how do I cut fat but still let loose with drinking 1x per week. I am a young guy, NOT A BODYBUILDER and I want to go out to the bars with my friends once per week. However, I my fitness goals are to get ripped. I know the best option is to not drink, but that isn't realistic, so does anyone have any ideas/strategies/protocols...lets say i drink to get drunk every friday night..how do i go about eating/training/etc in order to continue cutting fat while doing that.??

I was backpacking for 3 months, and drinking pretty much everyday and lost 20 lbs. (muscle as well).
 
ill tell you this much, lay off the weisen (German) beer. that stuff ill hit ya where it hurts.

You can't do both, especially 'drinking to get drunk' every week. Not only does alcohol have an impact on your bf levels from a caloric point of view but it impacts on your nitrogen balance which is important for muscle growth/protein retention/synthesis. If your goal is to be 'ripped' and by that I'm guessing 10% bf or less, the answer is simple. Don't drink, or if you're going to, have one or two at most. Otherwise, accept that fact that drinking is more important to you than being ripped is and move on.

Make a choice.

again, that is exactly the answer that i am not looking for..i AM NOTA BODYBUILDER, i simply do fitness recreationally. I already am under 10% bf, but would like to lose more. I'm being realistic though, understanding that there is no point of being shredded and busting my ass, if i can't let loose and have fun...i also know a lot of people that train and eat right during the week, make gains/cuts and drink once per week..so, i'm wondering if anyone has any methods for caloric timing, training techniques, increased cardio day of drinking, day after drinking, etc etc...i am going to drink, so rather than a lecture on me figuring out what i want in my life, i would really appreciate someone telling me how they balance their social life with their fitness life. I AM NOT A BODYBUILDER.

whats funny is you think that people on this board are against drinking alcohol..that is absurd..how many posts have i read that are about someone here letting loose after a competition or what crazy shit happened on friday night. just because you are on this board doesn't mean you have to adhere to a strict set of lifestyle rules. i'm a young, professional who works hard at work and in the gym and who wants to have some fun on the weekends. just because i want to drink once per week doesn't mean i can't be crazy about fitness. that you think these lifestyles are mutually exclusive is actually the funny part. certainly, if i were a competitive bodybuilder or fitness model, then, MAYBE your argument would have SOME merit, but again, i am simply a former college football player who wants to stay in shape while staying social. don't be so high and mighty and help out. what i was looking to hear would be something like this:

"hey muscleman12345, while i think your best bet would be to completely lay off of the alcohol, if you are absolutely going to drink anyway, then i would suggest....(running on an empty stomach the next morning, only drinking vodka, cutting out such and such calories before drinking or after drinking, hitting a sauna, etc.)"

so, does anyone have anything they do if they are planning on drinking?

something in your life is lacking or you wouldn't feel the need to get sloshed once per week. sounds more like problem drinking rather than having 1 or 2 to relax after a long week at work. instead of looking for the magic answer you want to hear, perhaps you should re-evaluate the priorities in your life.

i love getting life advice from people who are so vain they spend 4 hours in the gym and stick metal in their asses...i'm pretty sure my priorities are ok..i come on this board because you professionals have the most knowledge, not because i want to be like you...you understand that you all are looked at as pariah in common society, so please dont' lecture me about problem drinking..i don't need to drink, i want to..you guys NEED to stick hormones and steroids into your ass so that you can feel better about your shortcomings..please. i guess i'll have to find a board that isn't filled with meatheads and steroid monkeys.

stevo, just to let you know: from a professional standpoint, i'm pretty sure 'waisting' is actually spelled wasting..but hey, thats just my professional standpoint you moron.
 
hmm i see someone heading over to the isle of the dammed...lol...anyway heres alittle fact bacardi and diet coke has 0 calories. listen when i was in college i partied with the best of them and trained my ass off...was it smart, no. but i did it. try using things like carb cut offs during the week and whenever you eat anything try to fill up on protien first. i dont condone getting wasted once a week but i was in your position before. the alcohol is going to waste away muscle tuissue so everything else you do for the rest of the week has to be pretty strict. on a side note the other guys are right. this isnt the right board to be asking questions like this. most of the guys here are verry passionate about this sport and are advanced athletes. the ONLY reason im answering your question this way is because i have to answer it every day at work. im used to it.
 
any board that gives you different information is doing you a disservice you obnoxious prick. there are a few things you probably have no clue about as far as the effects of alcohol on metabolism. this is way more than a calorie counting thing. in the short run alcohol has been known to slow down your metabolism. do you remember the cartoons with the guy freezing in the snow and the dog came up with the whiskey tied to its neck? that whiskey didn't warm the guy up, to cooled him down so his body perceived that he is less cold. drop in body temperature = drop in metabolism.

Over the long haul, heavy drinking (and yes, drinking to get drunk once a week is actually considered heavy drinking. sorry frat star) has been known to depress thyroid function and testosterone production. thats right. so, by you drinking 1x per week to drunk, sloshed, shmammed, wasted, toasted, whatever you moron college freshman are deciding to term it, you are actually harming in a semi permanent way the two strongest god given tools you have in fighting against getting fat.

the next time you come on a board and open your immature mouth, do us all a favor and do some research on your own first. the effects of alcohol are well documented and all over the internet. If you had been intelligent enough to do this, we would never have known you existed, and, thus we would have all been better off.
 
You can drink, but you have to, at the very minimum, account for it in your caloric intake. So if you have to eat 3000 cals that day, dont eat all 3000 and then start drinking, but rather get your protein and EFAs in and then save the rest for booze if you want.

Moderation to everything is key though. If you get so fucked up that you dont know how much drank, you might want to cut back.

I was going to give you a feasable suggestion that a friend of mine uses succesfully when he's not competing but still wanting to be lean. But after reading the above abuse and also stereotyping of somesort etcetc, i'll keep it to myself or for those that can accept crticism in a mature fashion.

For every action (or lack thereof) there is a consequence. If you eat like shit, you will look like shit. If you don't exercise you will be out of shape. If you drink to get drunk...
It is what it is - deal with the consequences socially and physiologically. Don't ask us how to get away with it, rationalize it or condone it. That's your job.
