For Guys that want to keep their hair Finasteride is potent and can cause sides if not dosed tailored to you

I noticed 1mg finasteride wasn’t enough when I adjusted my trt and my test levels went from 700 to 1000. Had to up it to 2mg to keep the hair happy. Fortunately doesn’t seem to effect me sexually at all - I don’t notice any sides from it.

Are you sure the body's amount of 5-AR 2 increases with higher use of testosterone? I could see more of the testosterone binding with heavier use but are you sure there is actual increase of 5 alpha reductase enzyme? My point is, if the enzyme amount stays the same, increasing the dose of finasteride in accordance with the testosterone dose doesn't seem like it would help the hair.

I'm actually very interested in this subject because I'm wondering if once the 5 alpha reductase type 2 has been inhibited, if the excess finasteride is binding to type 1 alpha reductase and that's why the congnitive effects are happening (I'm aware of the low affinity but if enough is around in the bloodstream with nowhere to go......) That's another thread in and of itself but if someone reading this has an idea about that feel free to make a thread.

I've reduced down to 0.5 mgs finasteride on 20 mgs , some days 10 or 15 , trt.

The mechanism of finasteride-induced effects on mood and behavior are fairly well characterized, that is, they are very likely a result of decreased neurosteroids. In men, 1 mg finasteride was associated with a decrease of 5α-reduced steroids, especially of allopregnanediol, DHT, and pregnenolone, and this decrease is related to depressive symptoms (in a small subset of men) as presents in the post-finasteride syndrome. See also: Risk-reward profile for progesterone/allopregnanolone supplementation (I generally don't like supplementing these neurosteroids, but describe the tradeoffs therein)

Both myself and father take 5 mg finasteride a day and never suffered any of the psychological effects. Not sure how common that is. My father has been taking it now for almost 20 years.

It wouldn't hurt to take pregnenolone or progesterone while on finasteride. Possibly dhea as well.
