i've got a massive business meeting in a couple of months and its taking place on a golf course in Dubai.

Now I've hit a couple of balls before (not far, and in any direction i could get them to go).

does anybody else on here play and how have you found it being a bit bigger than the average guy?

I am a scratch golfer. In the winter if bulked its difficult to swing right now with being lean its 10x easier. Tough game bro, very tough.

the whole flexibility thing is killing me.

i'm aching like hell after last night and i think my delts are impeding me from the full swing. would i be ok from just having a half swing and relying on precision and power?

Since you have a little time I would pay someone to give you a couple of lessons. Get the basics down then hit the driving range a few times a week. Being bigger has no ill effect on my game. Once you understand the right path the club needs to follow to make good contact you just need to practice it.

i've got one of the golf pros that works in the building at a leisure company teaching me thank god.

its definitley tough to master the swing. i was hoping that was the case.

looks like its gonna be practice practice practice

Me.....

I just happy gilmore that shit!:D But then again i wouldn't hesitate to bitchslap Bob Barker either. LOL!
In all seriousness though....practice makes perfect. It's like anything. Just keep working at it. You will get better.

man, i enjoy golf ALOT. only problem is a game takes so long i have to bring usually 4 meals with me so its a pain in the ass.

i noticed when "on" i can crush the ball off the tee. more so than "off" thats for sure.
hopefully the guys will wanna play best ball ors something. vote for that if you can. then just get up there and happy gilmore it!!! -STEELE

you get those teeth out bro?

how you been bro? hows the new relationship? Nah still got the teeth lol.

i've already got my hockey sticks out so i'm just gonna go for the run up and smash approach.

I'm gonna walk around with LBA's strapped to my back and have a straw.

hit me up with an email if you get a spare minute mate.

What a cool place for a business meeting!!
I've tried to play the game and quite frankly, don't have the patience for it!!

I'd say the best thing is to stick with the pros you know and just do what you can...I'm sure they'll see that your focus isn't golf ;)

Best of luck to you!!

scratch eh? and a bodybuilder, wow! i say this more not because of flexibility issues, while that certainly could be a problem, but more the time factor.
most of the guys on here probably can't appreciate just how incredibily good par golf is. very impressive

thanks, i'll need it. the bad thing is i've got to fly there for the morning play in the afternoon, meal in the evening then fly back so i'll be shattered.

yeah this is what i figure my problem is gonna be. i have the range of motion of a plank of wood

I played in college way back in the eighties and still play a lot. I am better now at 50 then I was in twenties.

One thing to remember is that you don't need to look like tiger or Phil to be desent at golf. My swing now is half the back swing compared to my college days and I hit father now. I entered a long driving contest and won back in April last year for my district. I did not go for the finals for my region because they were testing for riods and I was on deca and I did not want unwanted attention.

Don't try to stretch just relax and swing for fun. Take a lesson on setup and make half swings which I call L to L motions. Making in a effort on putting and chipping will keep your scores less embarressing.

good luck.

Grid:

I have played a lot of golf. A lot. Too much. I quit cold turkey 6 years ago because it was taking too much time out of my life. I think the last year I played I played over 100 days not to mention range time. It was a huge time suck and destroyed many of my workouts.

Training and golf: I have played golf from 230lbs to 280lbs. Much more difficult at the larger size. I also basically did zero bicep specific work for close to ten years because I felt it effected my swing (it didn't).

Strength is certainly not the answer. Half swings are not the answer. Slow controlled flow is the key for me. I did shoulder stretches sitting at my desk with a towel quite often. I would also do hip stretches to assist with my turn. I've noticed that more muscular guys do one of two things to compensate for a thick chest/shoulders. They either truncate their swing (see charles barkley) or swing on much too horizontal a plane.

Taking your video camera to the range, or going for a quick taped lesson will pay dividends for you.

BTW I plan on playing again when I'm fifty in a couple years. I miss the social aspects of it, and for many of my friends its their only "kitchen pass".

so you think slow and steady wins the race in this instance.

what do these stretches look like? sorry bro just really need to know as am shitting myself badly about this game lol.

i've already missed a training session this week because of being at the fucking range.

Grid: LOL. I will try to find the sites with the hip and shoulder stretches I use. I actually got my hip stretches off a squash warmup poster. I will look and try to post the links.

I think a smooth swing with balance, good weight transfer and flush connection with ball will out do the strength approach. It just makes you grip the club too hard if your really torqueing the crap out of the swing. On my best drives, I hardly feel the ball, and don't finish up off balance.

Believe me, I used to try to "kill" the ball. I could hit a two iron a freaky distance because I used to hood the clubface making it less than a 1 iron. I also had shafts custom fitted that meant an extra half inch to an inch in length on my irons. I also had my lie adjusted for my tendencies at addressing the ball.

True Story: I was in Destin Florida at the Sand Destin resort having just played the second round of a yearly private tournament with friends from all over world. We are at a cocktail party before dinner and on guy was saying "Pekkerwood was hitting into us all day", without missing a beat, without one tenth of a second delay, another guy said "What were you doing in the woods?".

I know you guys who work outside will think this a puscadore type statement, but in the summer here in Ga when its 90 and humid and I've been out 5 hours playing golf, my workout was absolute crap. I guess I'm not cut out for construction any longer (I did work as a labor for a while).

i took a course once.......never have had so much musclesoreness!!!!!!
The flexibilty thingy sucks big time!!!!!Golf just isnt my thing.

Keep this in mind and forget about the pros, us regular weekend golfers have this saying drive for show and putt for dough. me i could kill the ball before i put on the size , but know i just try to keep it around the 175 to 200yard markers and on the fair ways , who cares if it is short as long as you can find it and play the next shot and move forward to the hole. boogey golf ain't bad if you ask me.

This is something I plan on doing more of some day.

i feel a lot better about the fact that there is some people on here that play. i've even taken to buying a nintendo wii so i can actually practice swinging without feeling like a complete tit on my own in the living room.

although it worries me that i'm even shocking at the computer game.

I'll post up a vid link soon of me on the driving range when i've had a few more practices

golfy...

Grid.... Not sure where you live but there are little swing instructors everywhere. A place called Golf Tec is where I went. Fairly cheap, but it might be a good idea to just get a little instruction from a pro. It helped me tremendously. Having played golf with STEELE my whole life I can atest to the 4 meals, HA. But he plays pretty well for a big guy. His backswing is fairly 3/4 which parellel being too much for everybody. Paralell meaning at the top of your swing the club is paralell to the ground. This is too much and would be probably impossible for you. i suggest a 3/4 at best and put some shoulders into it. If you can make good contact you should be ok. If this is something you are worried about and it could affect your business relationships (which it can) I would go and take a 3 lesson deal. After that you can do everything on your own for awhile. get a stand up mirror and practice your backswing. That IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of the swing. If you put the club in a bad position on the way back, its hard to correct that. Good luck...

I used to be a very good golfer in my younger days. Played on my highschool golf team and would've played on my college golf team if it wasn't for my troubled habits. Back then, I lifted weights solely to become bigger and more flexible so that I could hit the ball further. At one point I was averaging 300+yards off the tee with my driver. There is a point at which you become too big for golf. In fact, you lose flexibility. Your best bet is to increase flexibility whether thru yoga or w/e. I've tried to play golf at my frame, 5'7, 232, 14% bf and it's become very hard. The key for any golfer whether you are a skinny wimp or a big bber is flexibility, practice and lessons.
